🏆 DII’s All-Time Rushing Kings These are the ten most productive running backs in Division II history. They piled up yards, broke records, and delivered every season. Their totals still rank among the best across all levels of college football history. Here are the top 10. ⬇️ 1️⃣ @Danny__Woodhead – 7,962 yds (@ChadronStateFB) Woodhead is the all-time leading rusher in NCAA history. He ran for 7,962 yards and 109 touchdowns at Chadron State, including 2,756 yards and 42 scores in 2006. He won back-to-back Harlon Hill trophies, scored in 38 straight games, and added over 1,400 receiving yards. Chadron won RMAC titles in 2006 and 2007 and made two deep playoff runs. After college, he signed with the Jets, then carved out a 10-year NFL career with the Patriots, Chargers, and Ravens. He finished with 4,936 total yards from scrimmage and 32 touchdowns, including a receiving score in Super Bowl XLVI. 2️⃣ @OmonXavier – 7,073 yds (@NWBearcat_FB) Omon ran for 7,073 yards and 92 touchdowns across four seasons at Northwest Missouri State. He remains the only player in NCAA history with three straight seasons of 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns. He helped lead the Bearcats to four playoff appearances and three national championship games, facing Grand Valley State in 2005 and 2006 and Valdosta State in 2007. In his senior year alone, he rushed for 2,337 yards and 31 touchdowns, including 309 yards in a playoff win over Ashland and 292 more against Grand Valley in the title game. He was a four-time First Team All-MIAA pick and the 2007 MIAA MVP. Drafted in the sixth round by the Bills, Omon spent time with the Seahawks, 49ers, Jets, Browns, and Chargers. 3️⃣ Germaine Race – 6,985 yds (@GorillasFB) Race rushed for 6,985 yards and 108 touchdowns at Pittsburg State, finishing as one of the most productive scorers in NCAA history. He averaged over 7 yards per carry across his career and recorded at least 20 touchdowns in all four seasons. In 2004, he led the Gorillas to the national championship game against Valdosta State. He set NCAA records at the time for most total touchdowns and career points, including 33 rushing touchdowns in 2005 and 31 more in 2006. Race was a two-time MIAA Offensive Player of the Year and a three-time First Team All-American. After college, he signed with the Chargers and later played professionally in Europe. 4️⃣ Brian Shay – 6,958 yds (@ESUSports) Shay rushed for 6,958 yards and 81 touchdowns at Emporia State and finished his career with 9,301 all-purpose yards and 88 total touchdowns. In 1998, he won the Harlon Hill Trophy after running for 2,265 yards and 29 touchdowns, averaging over 205 yards per game. That season, he led all divisions in scoring and broke the NCAA all-time rushing record. Shay was a three-time First Team All-American and helped put Emporia State on the national map during his run. He went on to play in NFL Europe with the Berlin Thunder and in the original XFL with the Orlando Rage. 5️⃣ Josh Ranek – 6,794 yds (South Dakota St.*) Ranek rushed for 6,794 yards and 69 touchdowns at South Dakota State while the program was still in Division II. He topped 1,000 yards in all four seasons and had five games over 200. In 2001, he ran for 2,055 yards and 22 scores, earning All-American honors and a Harlon Hill finalist spot. South Dakota State moved up to FCS a few years later, but Ranek’s entire career came in the North Central Conference. Known for his downhill style and balance through contact, he carried the load year after year. He went on to a six-year CFL career, posting 4,377 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns with Ottawa, Hamilton, and Saskatchewan. *All of Ranek’s production came while SDSU competed in Division II. 6️⃣ @JoiqueBell – 6,728 yds (@WSUFootball) Bell rushed for 6,728 yards and 88 touchdowns at Wayne State, finishing with over 8,000 all-purpose yards. He ran for more than 2,000 yards twice, including 2,084 and 29 touchdowns in 2009 when he won the Harlon Hill Trophy. That season, he led all divisions in rushing, scoring, and all-purpose yards per game. Bell also caught 79 passes in his career and returned kicks, showing the versatility that made him a GLIAC standout from day one. He signed with the Bills after college and carved out a five-year NFL career, rushing for 2,235 yards and 22 touchdowns, most of it with the Detroit Lions. 7️⃣ Ian Smart – 6,647 yds (C.W. Post**) Smart rushed for 6,647 yards and 95 touchdowns at C.W. Post, finishing with 570 career points. In 2001, he ran for 2,536 yards and 33 touchdowns, breaking Barry Sanders’ single-season college rushing record at the time. He averaged over 8 yards per carry that season and led the nation in rushing and scoring. Smart was a consistent workhorse across four seasons and one of the most efficient touchdown scorers in NCAA history. After college, he spent time with the Jets and Buccaneers, then played six seasons in the CFL. He won the Grey Cup with the BC Lions in 2006 and was named the league’s top special teams player in 2007. **All of Smart’s production came while C.W. Post competed in Division II. 8️⃣ Kavin Gailliard – 6,523 yds (@AICFootball) Gailliard rushed for 6,523 yards and 72 touchdowns at American International. His 1999 season ranks among the best in NCAA history—2,653 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns on 8.7 yards per carry, breaking Barry Sanders’ NCAA single-season rushing record. He followed a 1,971-yard junior year with that record-breaking senior campaign, earning First Team AP Little All-America honors. Gailliard ran with urgency and balance, frequently dragging defenders for extra yards and turning short plays into long ones. His production made national headlines despite AIC not being a playoff regular. He remains one of the most explosive backs ever to come out of the Northeast-10. 9️⃣ Jerry Seymour – 6,397 yds* (@GlenvilleStFB) Seymour began his career at Central Michigan before transferring to Glenville State, where he rushed for 6,397 yards and 33 touchdowns over his final two seasons. In 2008, he ran for 2,357 yards, setting a school record and ranking among the highest single-season totals in Division II history. He was a two-time All-WVIAC selection and the driving force behind Glenville’s high-powered offense. Seymour ran with urgency and a physical edge, often delivering long runs between the tackles. His Glenville career included multiple 200-yard games and helped put the program back in the national conversation. Now he’s training the next generation at @RBAcademy_. *Total includes yardage from both Central Michigan (FBS) and Glenville State (D2). 🔟 Damian Beane – 6,346 yds (@SURamsFootball) Beane rushed for 6,346 yards and 72 touchdowns at Shepherd. He recorded four straight 1,000-yard seasons, making him the most consistent back in WVIAC history. He helped lead Shepherd to multiple conference titles and playoff appearances, running with low pad level, balance, and finishing power. His production set the standard for the program and remains one of the top career totals in Division II. - Every back on this list stayed in Division II and finished something. They didn’t look for the next offer. They built careers where they started....and some still made it to the league. You don’t have to leave to get a shot. You just have to be great. Any current DII backs still built for this list? #D2Football #CollegeFootball #HarlonHill #D2Legends #RunningBackU #RMAC #MIAA #GLIAC #WVIAC #NE10 #NSIC #LoneStarFB #GSC #D2RBs #NCAAFootball
