🚨 Paschal Donohoe TD confirms a 9% VAT rate for food, catering and hairdressing. He says the cut will “support 150,000 jobs” across the hospitality sector. #VMNews | #Budget2026

Food-led pubs have been hammered by a 50% VAT increase since 2023. That’s on top of soaring wages, utilities and insurance. Reinstating VAT at 9% is not optional — it’s essential. Without it, more rural pubs will close their doors. #VAT9 #SaveOurPubs @Paschald @jackfchambers

A sector of small businesses: Of the 20,213 hospitality businesses, 76.6% (15,482) employ fewer than 10 people. 99.6% of hospitality businesses are SMEs. Small businesses are the backbone of hospitality. It’s vital that Government reinstates the 9% VAT rate from January 1st, 2026. 🚨🚨Worrying CSO Data Released Today Hours worked in the food & accommodation sector fell 5.42% in Q2 2025 compared with the same period last year - that’s 300,000 fewer hours worked. Meanwhile, the overall economy grew +1.83% in hours worked. This further exemplifies that businesses are struggling and being forced to cut hours. In our Cost of Doing Business Survey: 80% of business owners said they would have to cut hours without action. 70% said they would be forced to reduce staff. This unfortunately seems to be coming to fruition. Government must act. The first step of action is reinstating the 9% VAT rate as promised.
