Re: the DHS shutdown... Everyone is busy picking a side, but what's getting lost is that there was bipartisan recognition back in January that the status quo at DHS wasn't working. That's why DHS funding was separated from the broader appropriations process with White House approval — there was an understanding that it needed structural reform. The problem is, negotiations on those reforms didn't materialize in time, and now we're in a shutdown. Since then: - Democrats have moved toward piecemeal funding bills targeting specific parts of DHS — moves that, whether intentional or not (I suspect it is intentional), create political pressure on Republicans to oppose them. - Republicans have leaned heavily into simplified & often misleading messaging on social media rather than engaging in detailed negotiations over the reforms they agreed were needed. The result is nothing but political theater. One side is using legislative tactics to create contrast & frame the other side as the problem. The other side is waging a messaging campaign to rally its base & is trying to win over public sentiment. Meanwhile, core security & administrative functions are caught in the middle, and the public bears the cost in the form of ridiculously long wait times at airports & decreased homeland security during an active war. This has gone on far too long. Both parties need to drop the performative nonsense and actually negotiate. Governing is not optional. This is literally your job. @GOP @TheDemocrats
