The Open Compute Project Foundation thrives because of the volunteers who generously share their knowledge, leadership, and commitment to advancing open infrastructure innovation throughout the global technology community. Their time and expertise are essential to driving OCP’s mission forward. Today, we are proud to recognize one of these outstanding contributors. Raj Kapoor - AMD What is your role in the OCP Community? Raj is a key volunteer leader within the OCP Open Platform Firmware Project and serves as Project Lead. He has been a strong advocate for open firmware development and has helped drive meaningful contributions and engagement from across the ecosystem, including leadership and participation from AMD. How long have you been involved with OCP? Raj began engaging with industry partners on open firmware initiatives around 2019 and became actively involved with OCP shortly thereafter through the OCP OSF project (Open System Firmware), now Open Platform Firmware (OPF) Project. Over the years, Raj has had the privilege of helping lead several key community initiatives, including openSFI (Open Silicon Firmware Interface) and UPCI (Unified Platform Configuration Interface). These efforts brought together silicon providers, system manufacturers, firmware vendors and hyperscalers to address some of the industry’s most pressing challenges around cost, TTM (time to market), scalability, interoperability, and long-sustainability of platform firmware and silicon enablement. Why do you volunteer your time to OCP? Raj believes open collaboration accelerates innovation. Through OCP, he helps create an environment where companies can work together on common challenges and build solutions that benefit the broader industry. What impact has OCP had on you professionally? OCP has provided Raj the opportunity to collaborate with technology leaders across the ecosystem, helping align firmware and platform initiatives while contributing to industry-wide standards and best practices. What are you most excited about right now? Raj is particularly excited about the increasing importance of open, secure, and scalable platform firmware as AI, cloud, and next-generation infrastructure continue to evolve. Something people may not know about you? Raj is widely respected for his ability to bring together diverse technical stakeholders and build consensus around complex engineering challenges. Volunteer Leadership Quote: “Open collaboration creates stronger technologies and a stronger industry.”

The first Coolant Distribution Unit specification ever contributed to the Open Compute Project now has its own course on OCP Academy. Project Deschutes is Google's open 2 MW liquid-cooling design (v1.0, February 2026), and this free 40-minute course walks you through it in three short modules: · Why high-performance CDUs are essential to next-gen AI/ML workloads · Inside the unit: physical envelope, thermal and hydraulic performance curves, pumps and heat exchangers by part number, and the PLC control strategy · Deployment: the Redmond HAC interface, a three-tier supplier model designed for 10–12 week global lead times, and field-replaceable maintenance Every figure traces straight to the official spec. By the end you'll be able to place the CDU in the Facility Water System → Technology Cooling System architecture, quote the headline targets (2 MW thermal, 3 °C approach, 500 GPM at 80–90 psi), and engage the OCP CDU working group as an operator, architect or supplier. Thermal architects, data center operators, procurement leads, CDU suppliers — this one's for you. Learn more and access the free course here: bit.ly/4fdQu9i

Seizing Data Center Heat Reuse Opportunities: OCP Guidelines for Local Authorities As data centers expand throughout the world, large amounts of electricity to power and cool their servers will continue to be needed. Almost all the energy entering a data center converts into a byproduct in the form of excess heat, which is often released into the atmosphere by evaporating water in cooling towers without further use. Many local authorities encourage the reuse of heat data centers produce. Reusing data center heat can lower energy costs, cut carbon emissions, and often reduce water use for the community and local businesses, while also benefiting data centers from the impacts on their energy consumption, permitting, public and client perception The Heat Reuse Subproject has provided preliminary guidelines and is planning to deliver further guidance on the topic discussed in this article.
