The U.S. Constitution is supposed to protect people from excessively harsh punishment—but that right is often violated. Let's break down what "cruel and unusual punishment" means. 🧵

Rep. Karen Whitsett spoke with Gongwer News Service about what happened during Friday’s session and shared her view of what’s been happening in the House Democratic caucus for the last two years. The problem, she said, has been House Speaker Joe Tate.

When prisons go into lockdown, incarcerated people are confined to their cells for nearly 24 hours a day—denied access to education, exercise, and more. Investing in humane conditions and opportunities for growth makes prisons safer—not extended lockdowns. vera.org/news/lockdown-…

Day 12: 🚨 The Juvenile Law Center found that marginalized youth through their research and reporting—especially youth of color, LGBTQ youth, gender-nonconforming youth, and youth with disabilities— are disproportionately placed in solitary. Facility officials claim that the act of placing these individuals in solitary confinement is deemed necessary “for their own protection,” or because the facility lacks appropriate services or accommodations. Confinement is widely recognized as a form of torture, inflicting severe mental and physical harm on its victims. It's a cruel, inhumane practice that must be brought to an end. Watch their video to learn more about the experiences of youth who have experienced confinement. 😔 No one should endure this kind of suffering. Are you with us to make a stand in ensuring this form of torture is brought to an end in America? Stay tuned this month to hear from impacted youth advocates across the country with our upcoming virtual event - you won't want to miss it! #30DaysofEducation @JuvLaw1975 #SolitaryConfinement #HumanRights #Youth

Day 10: 💔 It has been reported by the OJJDP that incarcerated youth die by suicide at a rate two to three times higher than that of youth in the general population. On this #WorldSuicidePreventionDay, we remember Kalief Browder, and all the youth whose lives were cut short by solitary confinement. Kalief’s story exposes the brutal injustices in the U.S. criminal justice system, as he was arrested at just 16 years old, going on to spend three years at Rikers Island—two in solitary confinement—without ever being convicted. All for a charge that was eventually dismissed. #30DaysofEducation #KaliefBrowder #SuicidePrevention #MentalHealth #SolitaryConfinement @afspnational @UNHumanRights @hrw @OJPOJJDP
