The social layer for the open metaverse.

State of Unreal 2026 just took place, and it’s fair to say @TimSweeneyEpic and his team are embracing the vision of open standards. A few big takeaways: • UE6 is coming around 2027, with the goal of letting developers ship once and have their work run across all devices. • Epic wants to enable massive-scale code and content interoperability across games. • They’re building unified APIs and a language that works everywhere, so developers can create smart assets that are portable across games and projects. • The vision is that any developer can run a server, build a game, and let users move freely from place to place, bringing their stuff with them. • Epic wants this to be a peer-based system with no single overlord. • The goal is to power persistent, live, large-scale worlds. • They’ve built a modern high-level framework on top of Verse to make it easier to build games, experiences, and interoperable components. • Portable code and content could unlock cross-promotion, portable player value, and shared economies across games. • Fortnite cosmetics will be the first proof point. Epic plans to move the base system into an open UE6 module usable by all games, meaning Fortnite outfits could work in other games, and other games’ outfits could work inside Fortnite. • This feels like the first step toward a shared economy for smart assets: functional assets with logic and utility that work across games and better recognize players’ time and spending. • They also announced the MetaHuman Developer Kit, opening up Rig Logic and MetaHuman DNA toolsets under the MIT license so MetaHumans can be delivered in any game, any engine, and on any platform. Still a long way to go, but portable identity, portable assets, and open standards feel like the right foundation.
