Our latest Image of the Week highlights how the Hyper-500 satellite supports emergency response, focusing on the Mombeltrán wildfire in Spain. Instead of just looking at heat, the satellite identifies Spectral Emission Lines - the unique light signatures created by the chemical reaction of the fire itself. Because the fire acts as its own light source, we can map the active fire front with precision, even when it is hidden behind dense smoke. To get this information to the ground as fast as possible, the OpenConstellation uses AI-on-board (edge computing) and Inter-Satellite Links (ISL). By processing the data in orbit and sending down a "light" version of the insights quickly, we can ensure that critical information reaches responders when every second counts. ConnectedCosmos: Introducing a Sovereign Standard for Secure Connectivity We are proud to announce ConnectedCosmos, a new LEO constellation designed to provide sovereign, secure communications and operational resilience for nations and businesses worldwide. By merging our Earth Observation capabilities with a new Sovereign Connectivity LEO backbone, we are moving beyond simple connectivity to deliver what we call "active resilience." This integration enables users to detect threats in real time and utilize actionable intelligence to make accurate decisions rapidly and confidently. In an increasingly polarized geopolitical landscape, ConnectedCosmos provides a new way for nation states and institutions to build their own secure communications capability. Through Optical Inter-Satellite-Links, we have created a gatewayless sovereign space mesh that routes data directly between satellites, physically bypassing compromised subsea cables and hostile terrestrial infrastructure. As our Founder and CEO Rafel Jordà Siquier says: "ConnectedCosmos represents a leap forward for Europe in building a resilient, secure and autonomous connectivity capability - giving nations and partners a reliable alternative for true sovereignty in orbit." By leveraging high-priority Ka-band spectrum and pan-European manufacturing, we are ensuring that critical data remains secure, trusted, and immediately usable. This satellite image captures a section of the Namib Desert in Namibia, where the world’s oldest desert meets the Atlantic Ocean. The landscape is defined by towering linear dunes and vast fields of ancient sand. The deep red hue of these dunes is the result of iron oxide accumulating over millions of years, creating one of the most distinct terrestrial signatures from space. At Open Cosmos, we make Earth observation more manageable and transparent. We help to support the researchers and local communities working to understand and protect these ancient landscapes. open-cosmos.com #OpenCosmos #EarthObservation

Wildfires in the Chubut province of Patagonian Argentine have consumed more than 45,000 hectares of land. These blazes threaten the UNESCO listed Los Alerces National Park and its ancient forests. While Standard True Color imagery often only shows the smoke plumes from these fires, the hyperspectral capacity of the Open Cosmos Hyper-500 satellites allows us to see through the smoke. By using upper Near-Infrared (NIR) narrow bands, we can distinguish active fire fronts and identify the precise location of flames. Delivered via the DataCosmos platform, this information is provided with low latency, a critical factor for wildfire response. Rapid data delivery, combined with AI-onboard processing, enables faster detection, smarter decision-making, and more effective deployment of firefighting resources. Open Cosmos remains committed to equipping first responders and governments with actionable EO data to protect fragile ecosystems, build climate resilience, and safeguard our natural heritage. open-cosmos.com/data-and-servi… #OpenCosmos #Hyper500 #EarthObservation

To mark the World Wetlands Day earlier this week, we are sharing a satellite view of the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Wetlands are some of the most productive ecosystems on Earth. They act as natural water filters and provide essential flood control by absorbing excess rainfall. These regions also serve as critical carbon sinks, capturing and storing carbon dioxide to help regulate the global climate. Despite their importance, wetlands are disappearing three times faster than forests. This image shows a portion of the Okavango Delta, one of the few major interior delta systems that do not flow into a sea or ocean. The dark, intricate patterns visible in the satellite data represent the seasonal floodwaters moving through a complex network of channels and lagoons. These water levels support a vast array of biodiversity in an otherwise arid landscape. Monitoring these fragile environments from space allows us to track changes in water distribution and vegetation health over time. With our OpenConstellation, more frequent EO data enables better, near-real time monitoring of wetlands, helping detect change faster and support smarter conservation and water management decisions. #OpenCosmos #EarthObservation
