On Friday, His Majesty King Charles III officially opened the new UK Space and Defence Gateway at The Quad, located on Harwell Campus alongside Open Cosmos headquarters. Our COO, Aleix Megias Homar and the team had the privilege of meeting the King and demonstrating how our satellite missions and data platforms provide the actionable insights needed to protect our planet. The event closely aligned with the principles of the Astra Carta-a framework launched by His Majesty to ensure the global space economy scales sustainably. Using space to solve urgent environmental challenges on Earth is exactly why Open Cosmos exists, and it was an honour to showcase that work on this stage. A huge thank you to everyone at Harwell Science and Innovation Campus and RAL Space for hosting an incredible day. #OpenCosmos #HarwellCampus #KingCharlesIII #EarthObservation #Sustainability

The European Space Agency's NanoMagSat mission is one of the more complex to come through Open Cosmos facilities. In this video, it is undergoing shock testing at Surrey Space Centre @SpaceAtSurrey - just one of many critical evaluations it undergoes before leaving the ground. The test simulates the sudden, high-intensity forces a satellite experiences during launch, stage separation, fairing jettison, and payload release. Every onboard system has to prove it can survive each test before flight. As a major milestone for the space sector, NanoMagSat has an important job. Three satellites will monitor Earth's magnetic field and ionosphere from space, carrying miniaturised magnetometers and plasma probes to track changes in Earth's core and study space weather. The constellation serves as a next-generation successor to ESA's Swarm constellation. @esa awarded the contract to Open Cosmos to design, build, launch and commission the NanoMagSat Scout satellites. This new family of small satellites delivers value-added science, either by miniaturising existing space technologies or by demonstrating new observing techniques. Importantly, the overarching aim is to achieve all of this quickly. This mission is in collaboration with CEA-Leti, University of Oslo (UiO), Technical University of Denmark (DTU), COMET Aerospace SL, Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP), and other key collaborators RYD Engineering and ExoLaunch.

While we often share "snippets" of what Open Cosmos satellites capture to focus on specific data points, for this week’s #ImageOfTheWeek, we’re stepping back to look at an iconic Open Cosmos image. This is the Richat Structure near Ouadane, Mauritania - often called the "Eye of the Sahara." This incredible, 40 km-wide geological dome features striking concentric rings created by ancient rock layers uplifted by a subsurface intrusion. Over millennia, softer rock eroded away while harder layers remained, creating the iconic ridges we see from space. Captured using our Multi-500 imagery, this wider perspective shows far more than just the structure itself, revealing how this massive natural wonder sits within the desert landscape. #OpenCosmos #EarthObservation #EyeOfTheSahara #RichatStructure #Multi500

This week’s #ImageOfTheWeek takes us to Egypt’s Suez Canal, where Open Cosmos Hyper-500 highlights a powerful tool for global maritime security: dark vessel detection. When vessels turn off their transponders to evade traditional tracking, satellite data provides a verifiable and unalterable source of orbital observation. This false colour image captures an active Ship-to-Ship (STS) transfer directly in the channel, pinpointing the exact physical presence of the ships. The data also captures the broader environment, mapping the geometric grids of the nearby Port Said aquaculture project and tracking water turbidity plumes to see how this heavy traffic impacts the coastline. By cross-referencing real-time hyperspectral imagery with AIS tracking logs, maritime operators can instantly check if transponders are off and flag anomalies keeping global supply chains transparent and secure. #OpenCosmos #SuezCanal #EarthObservation #MaritimeSecurity
