For anyone who takes the TTC regularly, this one is worth a look.
We just published a blog post on rideTO, an app built for daily commuters who want quick updates on arrivals, alerts, subway status, closures, and accessibility outages.

Day 1: submitted
Day 4: someone's on it
Day 19: turns out this data exists in 4 different systems
Day 35: we found the person who owns it
Day 52: they're on vacation
Day 71: data needs cleaning
Day 89: published 🎉

@JeffClark Love this!! I wonder how much has changed in almost 10 years now. The real question: are you a Tim or Starbucks guy?!
English

@Open_TO I did a simple project about coffee shop density in the city back in 2017. It's out of date but might be interesting. I used data from OSM
neoformix.com/2017/TorontoCo…
English

Datasets we'd love to publish but can't:
☕ Tim Hortons vs. other coffee shop density by neighbourhood
🍁 Patio season start dates vs. actual Toronto weather, every year
🏒 Productivity loss per Leafs playoff run, by ward
We publish what we can.

Toronto is hosting 6 FIFA World Cup matches this summer.
❓Where will people come from?
❓How will they move?
❓What happens to rideshare demand on game days?
💡We don't have all the answers, but we have the data that helps find them.

@georgebell Part 4: We can rarely publish relevant data before a council item is debated! We're increasing publishing speed, but there's lots of data - if we can't publish before the meeting, we try to after.
English

@Open_TO What’s the plan for the backlog though? It’s getting pretty big, lots of items being requested and not able to be completed. Bigger budget?
English

Did you know you can request any dataset?
Our open data request page is open to everyone. Browse what others have asked for, vote on ideas you love, or submit your own.

English

@georgebell Part 3: The "like" feature on the Public Request Portal, is a great signal for us to choose which request to action next and to show our partners that people care about data and would use it.
English

@georgebell Part 2: We have a few sources of data to publish - graphics on toronto.ca (per GL8.22), data in staff reports (per EX22.13), & public requests. We balance these three (and other sources + ops considerations) to publish max # of datasets over time!
English

@georgebell Part 1: We will assign the max number of resources we can internally to get through it and catch up, but honestly we get more requests and inputs than we can action!
English

@Open_TO We really need to talk about the backlog through….what’s the plan for getting it done? Will there be more funding? Can we vote on which ones need to be done? How are they prioritized? Why are major debates happening and the data isn’t getting made public?
English

@MumbledVanities Woah! Super cool. Thanks for sharing. We'd love to feature this on our gallery page: open.toronto.ca/gallery/

@Open_TO Hi, thanks for the data. I'm using it for this: torontoshelter.info

@mikaalnaik @TTCSwitches Hi~ There are several ways. We have a Request page open.toronto.ca/requests/; but first see if the request is there, otherwise, create a ticket and we'll monitor and reply if it's feasible. The other way is to email opendata@toronto.ca and one of our cool folks will reply to you.

If we are going to improve traffic and transit in this city, you would think the first step would be to have all the traffic signal timings in an "accessible and machine-readable" format...but staff can't do it...so they are going to continue charging 130$ per intersection... #topoli
