Text to my husband today: “Where do we keep the house filters?” Why? Because the AC guy was here today and offered to change them for us, a job that my husband handles. He knows when to change them, and he knows the size and type of filters we use. I do not. Because in a marriage you divvy up the mental load. I handle the grocery list because I cook, because I’m better at it! He does the dishes, so when he’s low on dishwasher soap he tells me and I add it to the list. This video implies only women have a mental load which is utter BS. Husbands and wives just handle different aspects of the household. That’s how it works. That’s how it’s always worked.

@Orangulent @LadyDemosthenes Yeah, I remember that. My son when he was like 4 would get up at 530 and watch Mr. Roger's while I jogged, then we'd snuggle in a chair and watch Caliou together. That was brutal. By 5 or 6 he was putting trash bags in. After that he took care of the litterboxes. Big help!

@Orangulent @LadyDemosthenes I didn't say it wasn't a job. But if you look at the time required for basic home and childcare, you'll find it's pretty equivalent to a fulltime job with commute. It's also paid since you get at least half of whatever your husband makes.

@SmalllIvy @LadyDemosthenes Wild that so many of you think being a stay at home parent isn't also a job, or that it's easy. Unpaid labor is still labor! The unequal division of labor and mental load also isn't exclusive to single income households.

@Orangulent @LadyDemosthenes What about the typical 50 hours a week most guys spend working + commuting to work? When you add to that the 800 hours/year things like filters, home and auto repair, yardcare, trash, errands,... take up, it adds to a lot. Plus dad is handed the baby when he gets home.

@LadyDemosthenes @MileyDurbin Wow, I had no idea so many women were married to linemen! That would explain why statistically so many women bear the brunt if the mental load I guess- all of their husbands are linemen and their kids should just go kick rocks

A lineman is not HOME consistently enough to be able to be in charge of extracurricular activities! You do realize this, right? So she KNEW he could be away from home for weeks at a time and SHE still decided to sign the kids up for all of these activities. So yeah, this mental load is her own fault.

@ScottWi23694014 @LadyDemosthenes This concept is not specific to single income households. It's very common in situations where both work full time as well. There are also plenty of households where the stay at home parent manages the money.

@Orangulent @LadyDemosthenes Filters, car maintenance, lawn, house maintenance, financial planning, paying kids college, taxes, paying bills…things that if they go wrong your whole life falls apart (except for lawn). I think maybe the wife can handle the type of milk to buy.

@MileyDurbin @Orangulent I too am a working mom. I also understand that if I put my child into a bazillion activities, I am creating for myself more mental load. She has created most of her own problem.
