Today I stand in solidarity with the message of Interim President Benny Wenda and the people of West Papua.
The reported use of excessive force against civilians in Tembagapura and the continued militarisation across West Papua are deeply alarming. Women, children, and elderly people are once again forced to flee their homes in fear, while reports of intimidation and violence continue to emerge from across our land.
West Papuans deserve peace, dignity, and the right to live without fear. The world can no longer remain silent while serious allegations of human rights abuses, displacement, and destruction continue.
We call on the United Nations, the Pacific Islands Forum, the Melanesian Spearhead Group, churches, solidarity movements, and all human rights defenders to demand independent access to West Papua and ensure international monitoring of the humanitarian situation.
If Indonesia claims democracy and peace, then transparency and unrestricted access for international journalists, NGOs, and human rights observers must be guaranteed.
West Papua deserves justice, accountability, and the right to determine its own future.
