Today I stand in solidarity with the message of Interim President Benny Wenda and the people of West Papua. The reported use of excessive force against civilians in Tembagapura and the continued militarisation across West Papua are deeply alarming. Women, children, and elderly people are once again forced to flee their homes in fear, while reports of intimidation and violence continue to emerge from across our land. West Papuans deserve peace, dignity, and the right to live without fear. The world can no longer remain silent while serious allegations of human rights abuses, displacement, and destruction continue. We call on the United Nations, the Pacific Islands Forum, the Melanesian Spearhead Group, churches, solidarity movements, and all human rights defenders to demand independent access to West Papua and ensure international monitoring of the humanitarian situation. If Indonesia claims democracy and peace, then transparency and unrestricted access for international journalists, NGOs, and human rights observers must be guaranteed. Indonesia holds a leadership role within parts of the United Nations system, yet serious and repeated allegations continue to emerge from West Papua regarding military operations affecting Indigenous civilian populations. This contradiction raises urgent questions about accountability, credibility, and the protection of human rights under international law. In regions including Timika, Tembagapura, and Kalikabur, local reports describe ongoing military activity leading to widespread displacement. Families are said to be fleeing their villages in fear, with women and children among those most affected. Communities report abandoning homes, farms, and livelihoods as they seek safety in increasingly unstable conditions. These are not isolated voices. For years, Papuan church networks, local communities, and human rights advocates have consistently raised concerns about militarisation, civilian harm, and restricted humanitarian access. The pattern of testimony has remained persistent: insecurity, displacement, and limited independent oversight on the ground. Whatever political narratives exist, one principle remains non-negotiable: the protection of civilians. Under international law, allegations of harm to civilian populations require urgent, independent scrutiny—not silence, and not political dismissal. This is why growing calls for international action are focused on clear and minimal demands: Independent investigation by neutral international bodies Unhindered humanitarian access to affected areas Protection for displaced civilians, especially women and children Transparent reporting and accountability mechanisms The international community cannot uphold human rights selectively. Where credible allegations of suffering persist, the response must be consistent with the principles of justice and protection it claims to defend. West Papua cannot remain in a space where reports of displacement and fear circulate without independent verification or international access. The voices from the ground are clear enough to demand attention. At its core, this is not only a political issue—it is a humanitarian one. Genocide continues in West Papua. Indonesian security forces have executed at least ten Papuans over the last ten days. At least 36 of my people have been murdered by the occupiers this year. Indonesia must be immediately expelled from both Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) and Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG). I have tabled a written question to the Spanish government about the increase in atrocities in West Papua. UN OHCHR @volker_turk visit is urgent and imperative and EU member states have a duty to ensure respect for human rights in at the forefront of any trade agreement.

Over 500,000 of us have died under Indonesian occupation, while more than 100,000 West Papuans are currently displaced by Indonesian militarisation. Right now, Indonesia is destroying West Papua’s forest for the biggest deforestation project in human history. How can the EU tackle climate change while endorsing this destruction?
