🧵Late last year, I got to work with @osc_london on a very interesting project. I was called on to create a highly detailed digital twin of a North Korean oil tanker, called the Yu Son, Here's how I did it...

I'd like to thank James, Lucas, Joe, Alessio and Sam on the @osc_london team for their contributions to this project! They helped with everything from organizing satellite imagery, ID'ing elements on the hull, to verifying and helping document my findings as a part of this process. They are a really amazing team and I'm thankful to have worked alongside them on this really fun project!

A lot of the work on making the Digital twin of the ship was made easier by the many procedural and proprietary tools that we created that helped form our Digital-Twin Pipeline, which we developed as a part of doing this project!

After Texturing and Lighting the ship and placing it in the Port of Vostochny, We also developed toolsets to turn our CG assets and GEOINT scenes into High Quality Synthetic Gaussian Splats, The Yu Son can be viewed as a Gaussian Splat in the piece that is linked above!

I combined it all with high end SubD modelling done with the same workflow that is usually reserved for Film-grade assets, We did this because we wanted to ensure that every part of the ship was detailed as it could be.

A lot of the parts weren't visible on the surface of the vessel clearly, so we had to perform comparisons with the Yu Son's Sister vessels to ID every part and model every component to the maximum detail possible.

Using Satellite Imagery and photos of the ship didn't give us enough detail to perform a reconstruction at the Level of detail that we had planned, So we developed a process where we Identified and characterized every part and component on the Yu Son.

We followed up this process with a process called Rotoscopy, where we had to match up the elements and wireframes of the ship with a few images to ensure that we could create an accurate Digital twin of the ship.

Because we were operating in an information-sparse environment, We pivoted to use a technique usually used in High end VFX called Multiple Camera Projection. In this process Images from multiple Virtual Camera's are projected onto an Image Plane containing a silhouette of the ship.

While building ships in 3D most people use Blueprints or LIDAR Scans which detail every part and surface of the real life ship in a perfect way, We didn't have access to either of these resources as vessels like these are really hard to gain access to physically.

I started with reviewing a lot of a lot of High resolution satellite Imagery, 3D Reconstruction and creation of a digital twin from Satellite Imagery is not a process that has been extensively detailed or documented publicly, So we had to develop our own process to do this.

Imagery taken on 5 July 2026 shows all dredgers have left the reef. Dozens of excavators and other vehicles are building rapidly across the island. Several cargo vessels can also be seen making deliveries of construction materials.
