Diversity is near and dear to my heart so, although I could not attend #ACG2023, I took off my flak jacket, stayed near the bomb shelter, and joined @MLongMD @sidbarritt4 & @BMoshiree to run the 5K here in Ashqelon.

@NeedhiBhalla Three reasons: First, I could easily see plenty of room for new initiatives. Second, the PIs are all super nice, which, admittedly, is rare. Finally, there is something satisfying about administration: compared to experiments, it’s very accomplishable.

@aurelepiazza @lichtenmj In that case, look at cell size papers from Mike Tyers, Bruce Futcher and Jan Skotheim. Since cells maintain a (more-or-less) constant nuclear:cell volume ratio, these G1 cell may be what your looking for.

@OrnaCF @lichtenmj Thanks Orna. Idon't mind so much about cell size, as the question pertains more to DNA concentration and physical distance between loci. Then an option could be to elutriate or FACS sort G1 arrested cells to isolate a small and a large population

Hi yeast experts: does anyone know of a mutant (or better, a conditional protein depletion) that causes a big change in yeast nuclear volume?

@aurelepiazza @lichtenmj To my knowledge, there aren’t budding yeast mutants with a robust larger nuclear:cell volume ratio, but you can create that if, for example, you block nuclear export (our unpublished data). As you can imagine, cells don’t like that.

@aurelepiazza @lichtenmj It depends what you mean by larger nuclei. Mutants that result in larger cells will also have larger nuclei (see molbiolcell.org/doi/10.1091/mb…), but I suspect you mean cell in which the relative volume of the nucleus is larger. 1/2
