It should be obvious to any serious thinker that the framework of the #ADOS movement is oppositional to the Pan Africanist “Back to Africa” framing, thus Garvey is not our predecessor, neither is N’COBRA.
NHJ doesn’t understand how these fundamental distinctions set ADOS apart from many (not all) of the people/groups she mentioned.
She doesn’t understand that declaring “people advocated for reparations before y’all” is a lot like saying “people studied economics before y’all!”
Of course, but how? What data was used? How did they create distinctions? Urgency? Exclusions? How did they define harm? How did it resonate on a grassroots level?
And were these movements or intellectual critiques? Both are valuable, but they serve different purposes.
Movement leaders use the work of intellectuals, but shouldn’t be compared to them.
