On 30 March 2025, in the village of Carnikava, the migrants allegedly lured the bird with food, knocked it to the ground, and broke its neck. After sexually assaulting it, they reportedly took the swan’s carcass to their rented apartment. A court in Jūrmala will hear the case under a special judicial procedure. No verdict has yet been delivered, but the suspects have already been placed on the European Union’s blacklist, with a lifetime ban on entering the EU. They could face up to 10 years in prison, followed by deportation.
