The number of Orthodox Churches and American Saints relics in California, despite the utter mess this state is in politically and morally. I’m convinced it’s why this state has not gone under yet. ☦️ Lord have mercy.

My spiritual father allows me to fast from food entirely one day a week. This was a compromise as I had asked him to fast every Wednesday and Friday as well as multi day fasts during Great Lent. He explained it to me as being a dangerous endeavor to start out this way, as it can lead to pride as well as eating disorders.

I get pushback when I suggest that we should consider *actually* fasting (horror of horrors! 😯) but one of these young men on here will one day become an ascetic because I got the wheels turning for them. I'll gladly take the heat if that is the trade off.

Welp. It’s 6:30 AM. Been at the ER since midnight. Got the test results back at 3:30 when the doc told me they’d be transferring this kid to the children’s hospital in an hour. Went home, packed my bags, came back, so I could sit in the world’s most uncomfortable chair for several hours and do nothing. Just so the right hospital can give him treatment for suspected Pnemonia. 😥

@Kiefer_Wool You realize it’s an Old Calendar prayer book? It’ll work with ROCOR or Russia, Romanian. It is Julian Calendar. Does not work well with American Antioch, Greek, or OCA. It is an “Old Believers” prayer Book.

After using many different prayer books I have settled with this one for a while as my favourite

@YoungPenitent I think the question can be applied to any service. I'm coming at this from a pure problem solving outlook. If you're getting reflux then it would stand to reason that you would abstain from food before services with prostrations.

@Orthotoks That’s not the only evening service with prostrations. Separate question.

Does anybody else have the problem of getting acid reflux when you do prostrations after a meal? It kind of ruins my night if I go to an evening service that involves prostrations.

@YoungPenitent Marriage is a Sacrament and takes precedence in order to fulfill the commandment to be fruitful and multiply. Monasticism is a noble pursuit though, and we should encourage the faithful to consider it as a worthy alternative to marriage.

There is no reason a layperson can't be an ascetic.

It warmed my heart to see so many different icons that people brought into church today.

@theclassicwife Yeah, it's expensive out here. I feel like I spend $400-$600 at Costco every other week, and that's not even all the groceries.

It doesn't matter how socially awkward you are or if you usually skip coffee hour. You need to go to Forgiveness Vespers. This is a necessary and universal asceticism. May God give you strength 🙏
