A fast and coordinated response by Firefighters prevented a balcony fire from spreading inside a high-rise on McArthur Avenue in Vanier last night. At approximately 19:39, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a call from a monitoring agency reporting active fire alarms at a high-rise building in the 100 block of McArthur Avenue. This was quickly followed by multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a fire on the fourth floor. Firefighters arrived on scene within four minutes of dispatch and confirmed a working fire on a fourth-floor balcony, with residents evacuating the building. Crews quickly advanced to the fourth floor, where they were met by a tenant who provided access to the affected unit. Firefighters rapidly extinguished the balcony fire, preventing it from extending into the unit or other areas of the building. The fire was brought under control and contained to the balcony by 19:53, just nine minutes after crews arrived on scene. Following extinguishment, Firefighters ventilated the unit and building using high-powered fans. Air quality was monitored and confirmed to be safe. No injuries were reported, and all residents were able to safely return to their units. No displacement is expected as a result of the fire. #OttNews 📸 OFS Photographer Jean Lalonde

Ottawa Fire Services Ice Rescue Teams rescued a golden retriever that fell through the ice into the Jock River in Richmond yesterday. At approximately 17:05, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a 9-1-1 call reporting that a dog had fallen through the ice and was struggling to keep its head above water. The caller reported the dog was in mostly open water about 10 feet from shore near the 3500 block of McBean Street. Firefighters arrived on scene and our Ice Rescue Teams confirmed the dog was clinging to an ice shelf approximately 15 feet from shore. Ice Rescue technicians quickly suited up and conducted a go-rescue. Crews were able to safely reach the dog and remove it from the freezing water at 17:14, less than 15 minutes after the initial 9-1-1 call was received. With warmer temperatures expected across Ottawa, including highs near +14°C today, Ottawa Fire Services is reminding residents that ice conditions on rivers, ponds, and waterways are extremely unstable this time of year. Residents are urged to keep pets on a leash near waterways and to avoid allowing them onto ice-covered surfaces. If a pet falls through the ice, owners should never attempt a rescue themselves. Call 9-1-1 immediately and keep your eyes on your pet so crews can locate them quickly. Our response times are fast and our Ice Rescue Teams are highly trained and equipped for these situations. Calling 9-1-1 right away gives you and your pet the best chance of survival. #OttNews

Firefighters responded to a serious high-rise apartment fire last night where crews worked quickly under extremely difficult conditions to rescue multiple residents trapped inside the unit. Four residents were rescued from the apartment. Tragically, two later succumbed to their injuries. At approximately 21:36, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a call from a monitoring agency reporting active fire alarms at a high-rise building in the 300 block of Somerset Street West. Shortly after the initial notification, multiple 9-1-1 calls were received reporting a fire in an apartment on the 19th floor, with reports that residents were trapped inside. One caller contacted 9-1-1 from the balcony of the fire unit stating they were trapped due to intense heat, heavy smoke, and flames inside the apartment and were unable to exit through the door. Firefighters arrived on scene three minutes after being dispatched and confirmed heavy smoke coming from the rooftop of the high-rise. Crews quickly made their way to the 19th floor where they located the fire unit and encountered heavy smoke and flames from floor to ceiling upon entry. Firefighters advanced a hose line into the unit and immediately began searching for trapped occupants. During the search, Firefighters located three unconscious residents inside the apartment. Each was removed from the unit and transferred to additional crews waiting in the hallway to begin lifesaving care. A fourth resident was located on the balcony of the apartment. That resident was conscious and was safely assisted from the balcony and removed from the unit by Firefighters. A fifth resident, a neighbour from the fire floor, was also assisted out of the structure by Firefighters. A medical sector was established in the lobby with our partners from @OttawaParamedic, where Firefighters and Paramedics began assessing and treating the victims. CPR was initiated on two of the residents. While rescue and medical operations were underway, Firefighters inside the unit continued battling heavy flames and extreme heat conditions. Crews were successful in containing the fire to the unit of origin, preventing it from spreading further within the building. The fire was declared under control at approximately 22:03. Firefighters then began ventilating residual smoke from the structure using high-powered ventilation fans. Ottawa Fire Services would like to thank our partners from @OttawaPolice for assisting by securing the scene during operations. An @OttFire Investigator attended the scene, and an Investigator from @ONFireMarshal will also be attending. The fire remains under investigation at this time. A fire watch remains in place, with a fire truck remaining on scene to monitor for any potential flare-ups. Ottawa Fire Services extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the residents who lost their lives in this tragic incident. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this call. #OttNews

Firefighters are responding to numerous motor vehicle collisions this morning due to icy roads. Please slow down and drive with caution. We are also responding to several calls for downed hydro lines due to ice buildup and heavy winds. ⚡️Downed Hydro Line Safety Tips: • Always assume the line is live • Stay at least 10 metres away • Call 9-1-1 immediately • Never touch the line or anything touching it (vehicles, fences, trees) • If a line falls on your vehicle, stay inside and call 9-1-1 • If you must exit due to fire, jump clear with both feet together and shuffle away #OttNews

Firefighters responded to two back-to-back collisions yesterday evening, safely extricating multiple occupants. The first call came at approximately 20:32 when our partners from @OttawaPolice requested us to respond to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Nanaimo Drive and Richmond Road. Firefighters arrived on scene four minutes after being dispatched and confirmed a two-vehicle collision with airbags deployed. Crews stabilized both vehicles and confirmed that two occupants from one vehicle had already self-extricated. The driver of the second vehicle was able to exit, however the passenger remained trapped. Using specialized hydraulic tools, Firefighters removed the heavily damaged passenger-side door to gain access. Extrication began at 20:41 and the occupant was safely removed from the vehicle at 20:45 before being transferred into the care of our partners from @OttawaParamedic. Firefighters then disconnected the batteries in both vehicles and applied absorbent to leaking fluids before clearing the scene. While crews were still completing that response, a second call came in at approximately 20:45. The Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a request from @OttawaPolice to respond to the intersection of the National Capital Commission Driveway and Tunis Avenue for reports of a single-vehicle rollover with no occupants exiting the vehicle. Firefighters arrived within four minutes and confirmed a vehicle had bern rolled and was resting on its side with both the driver and a dog trapped inside. Crews stabilized the vehicle and safely extricated both the driver and the dog through the sunroof at 20:55. Firefighters established a medical sector and began assessing and treating the driver. A Firefighter on scene, who is also a trained veterinarian, assessed the dog and confirmed it was not injured. Patient care was transferred to our partners from @OttawaParamedic at 21:09. Firefighters then de-energized the vehicle before clearing the scene. #OttNews

Firefighters quickly contained two separate kitchen fires in high-rise apartment buildings over the past two days, preventing both incidents from spreading beyond the units of origin. The first incident occurred yesterday morning at approximately 07:25, when the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a 9-1-1 call from a resident reporting a kitchen fire in an apartment in the 2000 block of Draper Avenue. Firefighters arrived on scene within three minutes of dispatch and observed black smoke coming from a fifth-floor balcony. Crews quickly made their way to the fifth floor where they encountered heavy smoke conditions. The fire unit was located and Firefighters made entry, confirming heavy flames in the kitchen. Firefighters immediately began extinguishment efforts while conducting searches of the unit. The fire was declared under control at 07:42 and was contained to the kitchen. Two complete searches of the apartment confirmed there were no residents inside. A cat that had been reported missing was located by Firefighters in a bathtub. The animal was safely brought outside, provided oxygen, and reunited with its owner. Residual smoke was ventilated from the building and air quality was monitored until it was deemed safe for residents to return to their units. Victim Services attended to assist three adults displaced from the affected unit. No injuries were reported. The second incident occurred today at approximately 11:03, when the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a 9-1-1 call reporting smoke coming from a sixth-floor apartment in the 700 block of Springland Drive. The caller indicated they were unsure if anyone was inside the unit. Firefighters arrived on scene within three minutes of dispatch and quickly proceeded to the sixth floor of the seven-storey apartment building. Crews encountered black smoke in the hallways on both the fifth and sixth floors while locating the affected unit. Upon entry, Firefighters confirmed a pot had been left on the stove. The fire was extinguished and declared under control at 11:50. The occupant of the unit sustained burns to their hands and was assessed and treated by Firefighters in the lobby, including the administration of oxygen. Care was then transferred to our partners at @OttawaParamedic. Two complete searches of the unit confirmed no other occupants were inside. Residual smoke was ventilated from the building and air quality was monitored until it was deemed safe for residents to return to their units. An @OttFire Investigator attended the scene. Firefighters cleared the scene at 13:21, leaving the scene in the control of @OttawaPolice. #OttNews
