Extreme weather conditions added to the challenges Firefighters faced as they contained a basement fire in a multi-unit residential building late yesterday afternoon. At approximately 4:09 p.m. yesterday, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a 9-1-1 call from a passerby reporting smoke coming from the rear of a three-storey, detached multi-unit residential building in the 400 block of George Street West. Firefighters arrived on scene two minutes after being dispatched and confirmed heavy smoke coming from the rear of the structure. Crews initiated a fast attack, advanced a hose line and entered the basement through the rear of the building. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke conditions and quickly located flames at the bottom of the basement stairs. As crews opened walls and ceilings to check for fire extension, additional flames were discovered and extinguished. Firefighters searched the entire building and confirmed no residents were inside. A cat was located during the search, safely brought outside, administered oxygen by Firefighters and reunited with its owner. The fire was declared under control at 4:55 p.m. There were no reported injuries. Victim Services was dispatched to assist six residents who were displaced as a result of the fire. A “fire watch” was established, with a Firefighters remaining on scene to monitor the building for any flare-ups. An @OttFire Investigator was dispatched to determine the cause and origin of the fire. #OttNews 📸 @OFSFirePhoto

Our Rope Rescue Team safely rescued an injured worker at a construction site in the 1200 block of Hemlock Road this afternoon. At approximately 3:12 p.m., the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a call from our partners at @OttawaPolice requesting our response for reports of a construction worker who had fallen from a ladder into a pit. It was initially unknown how far the worker had fallen. Firefighters arrived on scene three minutes after being dispatched and confirmed the worker was approximately 18 feet down a steep embankment and unable to get out due to injury. Our Rope Rescue Team began setting up for the rescue while Firefighters made contact with the worker and prepared the patient for removal in a Stokes basket. An aerial ladder was also set up to serve as an anchor point. Once the worker was secured in the basket, they were safely hoisted out of the confined space with a Rope Rescue Technician attached to the Stokes basket. At 3:55 p.m., the rescue was complete and the patient was transferred into the care of our partners at @OttawaParamedic. 📸 OFS Photographer Jean Lalonde 🎥 Ottawa Fire Services #OttNews

Firefighters safely extricated a trapped occupant following a serious two-vehicle collision in Ottawa’s west end this afternoon. At approximately 1:57 p.m., the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a call from our partners at the @OttawaPolice requesting our response to the intersection of Flewellyn Road and Ormrod Road. Firefighters arrived on scene and confirmed a two-vehicle collision. One vehicle had left the roadway and was lying on its side in the ditch. A utility trailer being towed by the vehicle had jackknifed and was facing the opposite direction, resting against the truck. Two off-duty Firefighters were already on scene and provided responding crews with an update. One of the off-duty Firefighters had climbed inside the vehicle to assess the trapped driver’s injuries and stabilize the lone occupant until crews arrived. The driver and passenger of the second vehicle were both out of their vehicle when Firefighters arrived and being cared for by @OttawaParamedic. Crews quickly stabilized the overturned vehicle and brought a charged hose line forward as a safety precaution. Firefighters then used specialized extrication tools to remove the roof of the vehicle. Once the roof was removed, Firefighters determined the occupant’s legs remained pinned beneath the steering wheel. Crews used powerful hydraulic tools to perform a steering wheel lift, raising the steering column and freeing the occupant’s legs. At 2:45 p.m., Firefighters cut the occupant’s seatbelt and safely extricated them onto a backboard before carrying them from the ditch to the roadway. The occupant had sustained a compound fracture so Firefighters immediately applied a tourniquet to control the bleeding. Firefighters also assisted with loading a patient from the second vehicle into an @Ornge air ambulance. Firefighters cleared the scene at 3:21 p.m. #OttNews

Firefighters battled a fully involved house fire in Kinburn yesterday evening. At approximately 5:44 p.m., the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting flames coming from the attached garage of a single-family home in the 1800 block of Diamondview Road. Firefighters arrived on scene two minutes after being dispatched and confirmed the fire had spread from the garage into the two-storey home. The structure was fully involved, with heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence. Firefighters were met outside by the residents, who confirmed everyone had safely evacuated and all pets were accounted for. Crews initiated a fast attack and advanced a hose line toward the structure. The home is located in an area of the City of Ottawa without fire hydrants, so Firefighters used tanker trucks to shuttle water to the scene from a nearby water source. Propane tanks on one side of the home created an additional hazard for Firefighters operating on scene. An aerial ladder was also set up to attack the flames from above. The fire was declared under control at 6:59 p.m. Victim Services was dispatched to assist seven residents who will be displaced due to the fire. An @OttFire Investigator attended the scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire. #OttNews

Firefighters safely extricated a trapped passenger following an early morning collision in #Ottawa. At approximately 1:24 a.m. this morning, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a call from our partners at the @OttawaPolice requesting our response to the intersection of Montreal Road and St. Laurent Boulevard for reports of a single-vehicle collision with one occupant trapped inside. Firefighters arrived on scene four minutes after being dispatched and confirmed a single vehicle with heavy front-end damage on the passenger side. The vehicle was facing westbound in the eastbound lanes of Montreal Road, west of St. Laurent Boulevard. The driver was out of the vehicle and uninjured. The passenger remained trapped inside. Firefighters confirmed there were no other occupants in the vehicle. Crews stabilized the vehicle using cribbing and disconnected the battery before beginning the extrication process. A Firefighter entered the vehicle to provide patient care and maintain C-spine stabilization while the extrication was underway. Firefighters used specialized tools to remove both passenger-side doors and the B-post of the vehicle. The passenger was safely extricated on a backboard at 1:42 a.m. and transferred into the care of @OttawaParamedic. Firefighters also spread absorbent on leaking fluids before clearing the scene. The scene was left in the control of the @OttawaPolice for their investigation. #OttNews

We had such a fun time at the Heroes for Heroes event with the @OttawaPolice, @OttFire and @OttawaParamedic. It was a wonderful morning of making new animal friends, meeting emergency services members, and exploring their vehicles. 🚨🚑🚒
