DID YOU KNOW?? The Hollywood Walk of Fame is a "growing" landmark, not a rotating one. As of 2026, there are over 2,700 stars along the sidewalks, and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is constantly adding more rather than swapping them out. 1. The Expansion Strategy: When a new star is added, they don't kick an old legend out. Instead, they simply extend the Walk further down Hollywood Boulevard or onto the side streets (like Vine Street). While the Walk keeps growing, the most famous stars (like the original 1960 class) are clustered near the intersection of Hollywood and Highland. Running Out of Room? Yes, eventually, they will run out of sidewalk, but they have already expanded into the areas in front of the TCL Chinese Theatre and are moving further into the "outer" blocks of the historic district. 2. Replacing the "Dead" (but not the stars): The only time a star is "replaced" is if the physical monument is destroyed or severely damaged. If a star is cracked or vandalized (which happens famously to political figures or controversial stars), the Hollywood Historic Trust repairs or replaces the terrazzo and brass plate with an identical copy of the same person. Once you are on the Walk, you are effectively there forever. The Chamber of Commerce has a strict policy; they never remove a star, even if the celebrity is "cancelled" or convicted of a crime. They believe the Walk is a historical record of entertainment history, not a "good behavior" award. 3. You Have to Pay for Your Own Star: One of the most surprising facts is that a star isn't just "given", it’s essentially purchased. In 2026, the cost of a star ceremony is $75,000. Who Pays? Usually, it’s not the celebrity. A film studio or record label pays the fee as part of a promotional campaign for a new movie or album release. Part of that $75,000 goes directly into a trust to pay for the future cleaning and repair of that specific star so it doesn't fall into disrepair. 4. The "Ghost" Stars: There are stars on the Walk for people who don't actually exist. You will find stars for Mickey Mouse, Godzilla, The Simpsons, and even Lassie. In recent years, the Walk has begun including more "Digital Creators" and pioneers in streaming, acknowledging that "Hollywood" now lives on the internet as much as it does on the silver screen. 5. The Selection Process: Every year, hundreds of nominations are submitted, but a committee only selects about 20–24 people. The Rule is that the celebrity must agree to show up for the ceremony. If they don't agree to attend within two years of being selected, the offer expires. This is why legends like Clint Eastwood don't have stars, they simply aren't interested in the ceremony! If you could pay $75k to put anyone (living or dead) on that sidewalk, who would be your first choice? Hopefully you've learnt something new today. Cheers 🥂 🙂 The Medic Who Writes™🌚
