US President Donald Trump was going to be the president who stops wars, while Kamala Harris, if elected, would have sent American sons and daughters to die in needless wars. Fast forward to March 2026, when White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed Trump attacked Iran because “he had a feeling”. No one can dare claim that a man waged a needless war because he was emotional. In Outlook’s April 1, 2026 cover titled “ParaDime Shift”, we explore the small but significant modification to a commemorative dime in which the US government has dropped the olive branch symbol—a symbol of extending peace. The issues also looks at the US-Israel war on Iran, and how it has reached Indian kitchens. In January of 2025, Trump had proclaimed, “We will measure our success not only by the battles we win but also by the wars that we end – and perhaps most importantly, the wars we never get into,” he said. But for his own country, peace took a backseat, it would seem. Instead of stopping wars, he has started them, many of them in fact. In his first year back in office, Trump bombed seven countries: Yemen, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, and Venezuela. And on February 28, 2026, the US and Israel launched an attack on Iran, killing their Supreme Leader, the former Ayatollah, Ali Khamenei, over 160 school girls, and over 1100 civilians. As the US-Israel machinery shows no signs of “ending war” this time, we revisit Outlook’s coverage of the election which shaped these future wars. #Replug | November 11, 2024, issue of Outlook Magazine, titled 'White Wash', covered the US election as the race was nearing its finish line. The insanity and the inertia, the rhetoric and the reality and everything that is the US presidential election were explored. Outlook magazine's November 21, 2024, issue, 'Cry Freedom', looked into the many violent things Trump has said over the years. There are all kinds of threats to all kinds of freedoms, including the freedom of the press. In a cover that featured Lady Liberty and Lady Justice facing each other in solidarity, Outlook underscored the need for women, immigrants, and everyone else to understand that the election was not only about economics and geopolitics but also about the rights of people to live with dignity and freedom. #Trump #War #Peace

What a nation puts on its currency is never an accident. The US is removing the olive branch from its Dime coin, replacing peace imagery with an eagle clutching arrows, even as it wages war in West Asia. The Roosevelt Dime, which carried symbols of liberty, peace, and strength, will not return until 2027. In India, a Rs 100 commemorative coin marking the RSS centenary depicted Bharat Mata holding what closely resembles a saffron flag, drawing fierce criticism from CPI(M) and Congress, who called it a distortion of history. Meanwhile in Britain, Winston Churchill is being dropped from banknotes in favour of native wildlife, sparking backlash from Tory leaders. Three countries, three coins, three very different stories. But the underlying truth remains the same. Currency is never neutral. Change the symbol, and you change the message. Read the full review by @sakshischavan: buff.ly/frfG3sw Aditya Dhar’s second instalment in the franchise reveals clear ambition, but raises a pressing question: does it genuinely register the suffering of victims of war, or does it reduce them to instruments of provocation for a gory spectacle?

When Iranian state media confirmed on March 1 that the Ayatollah, Ali Khamenei, had been killed in a US–Israeli military strike, the news instantly echoed far beyond Tehran’s walls. In parts of India with significant Shia populations — from Srinagar’s Lal Chowk to the old city of Hyderabad — hundreds of mourners took to the streets. Many carried his portrait and chanted slogans of solidarity with Iran’s grief. In Kolkata, people protested the imperialism of the US and burned effigies. But in most cities, the scenes showcased a different kind of protest. Of loss.
