Thankfully some construction workers gave a hoot for our feathery friend. A adolescent great horned owl was discovered stuck in a cement mixer by workers pouring concrete. They cared enough to hose the bird down with water, wrapped it in a towel, and seen about getting it to a rehibilatator. It took days for the employees at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, to pick concrete from the birds face, right wing, and chest with forceps. It started healing but didn't molt to produce new feathers. He could fly but owls need to be stealthy because they hunt at night, and their prey can't hear them coming. Normally they have tufting on the edges of their feathers to quiet their wings. This owl no longer had it. So they had to do a procedure called imping, which takes feathers from a donor bird, to use adhesive to stick the donor feathers to existing shafts. An extremely nerve-wracking process, but 10 new primary feathers and a secondary feathers was attached to the right wing. It worked. He was able to fly and he passed the test with a decibel meter for the quietness. Imping has been used by falconers "for eons" and is a very effective treatment. This definitely has residents circling. The town of Hillsborough, NC, have served local residents Kenneth and Linda Ostrand with a civil petition, seeking a court order to stop them from feeding vultures, and bringing hordes of them to the town for the last 2 years. The residents say they are a nuisance leaving foul-smelling dropping all over their possessions, and even pulling roof tiles off their roofs, causing widespread property damage. Linda Ostrand, a longtime wildlife rescuer, says the claims are baseless, and filed a petition to have the claims dismissed. The Supreme Court Just Ruled on VA's Motion Over Their Redrawn Map. Meltdowns Are Coming. With SCOTUS rejecting Virginia's AG Jay Jones attempt to overturn the state's SC ruling on the redistricting map- it was the final nail in their coffin. Play stupid games...🙄 For many years, blue states have gotten away with redistricting maps that wipe out any GOP representation in their states.
