What happens to your Steam library, MMO characters or years of in-game progress when you're gone? It's a question that's becoming increasingly relevant, and in China, several courts have now ruled that game accounts and virtual items can be inherited by family members, even when a game's terms of service say accounts are non-transferable. In one case, a court ordered a game company to transfer a deceased player's account to his mother. In another, judges ruled that a valuable in-game item should be shared between the player's widow and their in-game partner after recognising that both had helped acquire it. The rulings reflect a growing view that digital accounts can carry real financial and personal value, making them part of a person's estate rather than something that simply disappears when they die. The decisions don't change the rules outside China, but they add fuel to a debate many gamers have had for years. If you've spent thousands on games, skins, DLC and collectibles, should your family be able to inherit them?
