Schultz et al. published this study in the British Medical Journal in 1999. 8 couples participated. The participants selected were small to average in size so that they could fit in the MRI machine.
The important points:
-No women reported having a “G-spot” or producing female ejaculation during orgasm, nor did the imaging capture any structures suggesting a Gräfenberg spot or a separate reservoir of fluid indicating “female ejaculation.”
-Some men took sildenafil so that they succeeded with complete penetration that lasted long enough (12 seconds) for sharp images.
-The images showed that during “missionary position” intercourse the penis is not straight. The penis bends into a boomerang shape during vaginal penetration. The pendulous anterior part of the penis almost became parallel to the spine of the woman during the penetrative act. The pendulous part made an angle of around 120° to the root of the penis during the act to achieve this and helped in maximum penetration.
-Only the first couple was able to perform coitus adequately without sildenafil. The reason might be that they were the only participants in the real sense: involved in the research right from the beginning because of their scientific curiosity, knowledge of the body, and artistic commitment. And as amateur street acrobats they were trained and used to performing under stress.
-Eight women had a complete sexual response during sexual stimulation and these women described their orgasm as “superficial.”
-There was displacement of the uterus (upwards) and lengthening of the anterior vaginal wall and hardly any change in the position of the uterus during sexual arousal, unless it was caused by intromission of the penis.
-Magnetic resonance imaging showed strikingly that during female sexual arousal changes occurred in the anterior vaginal wall. Hoch's concept of a clitoral-vaginal sensory arm of the orgasmic reflex refers specifically to the anterior vaginal wall and the deeper tissues and the images from this study supported this.
-These internal anatomical observations corrected medical misconceptions about sexual physiology that had existed since the sketch — “Coition of a Hemisected Man and Woman,” by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519).

They also showed how the uterus and vaginal walls shift during female arousal — correcting long-held misconceptions taught in medicine. The experience itself was awkward and unromantic. They had to stay still, follow instructions from another room, and squeeze into one of the earliest MRI machines ever built. But Ida later described it as an act of love and purpose. She didn’t expect it to become famous — she simply wanted science to understand women’s bodies better. Years later, this strange experiment is still talked about because it changed medical textbooks and deepened our understanding of human anatomy. It’s a reminder that science isn’t always clean labs and test tubes — sometimes, it’s bold, uncomfortable, and world-changing.
