Dan and Phil had fans over the moon— and then subsequently laughing— after posting an April Fool's video showing Dan Howell getting on bended knee to propose to Phil Lester. Starting out the video with a clip of a suit-clad Dan Howell showing the camera a Haribo ring, he grabs Lester’s hand and details some of the reasons why he cares so deeply about their partnership. “You are the most important and, basically, only person in my life. We are roommates, male podcast hosts, we keep each other's piss stream steady… and now it's time to do something that I have always dreamt of,” Howell says, before getting down on one knee and asking Phil to be his “phusband”. Sadly, Phil refuses the proposal, claiming they’re “moving too fast,” and goes on to eat the candy ring, leaving Dan alone to deliver a heartbroken ad read to those still watching. The comedy duo confirmed in an October 2025 YouTube video that they’ve been in a relationship for the past 16 years after both Howell and Lester separately came out as gay in 2019. In the video, the pair opened up about the fact that they’ve been in a romantic relationship since 2009, in addition to vlogging and working together. Since publicly confirming their relationship, the couple have had plenty of fun sharing a slightly closer look at their relationship dynamic with fans, and making jokes about their partnership. This April Fool's Day joke marks the latest addition to the duo’s antics.
