AI built with communities, not just for them 🌍 In our latest Accelerating AI Ethics episode, Dr Caroline Green is joined by Dr Joy Buolamwini and Angela Oduor Lungati (@ushahidi) to discuss data justice, algorithmic bias, women’s leadership in tech, and Africa’s role in shaping the future of AI. From exposing bias in facial recognition and founding the @AJLUnited, to leading a global platform for crisis and human rights data, they explore grassroots innovation, accountability across the AI supply chain, and Africa’s growing role as a builder, not just consumer, of AI. 🎧 Listen here: accelerating-ai-ethics.captivate.fm/listen

Last week, Professor of Law and Regulation of AI at the Institute for Ethics in AI, @IgnacioCofone, delivered the annual lecture of the Centre for Business Law and Practice at the University of Leeds. In his talk, “How AI Requires Rebuilding Data Protection Law,” Professor Cofone explored how modern AI systems challenge the traditional foundations of data protection. The lecture highlighted why existing consent-based frameworks may no longer be sufficient, and why data protection law must increasingly focus on constraining harmful inferences and addressing real social impacts of data practices.
