Every phone call I've taken this week has broken my heart a little bit more. So much unnecessary suffering. Please spread this information, as far and wide as you can. You may save a life. 🙏 A hedgehog *out in the open* in the day is in serious trouble and needs urgent help. Always. No exceptions. Any size. Any time. Hedgehogs are nocturnal prey animals, they have no defences in the daytime, it's deadly dangerous for them. They are designed to hunt at night, to navigate and catch insects in the dark, occupying a specific ecological niche. They are not adapted to withstand high temperatures, and their shape means they rapidly dehydrate during daylight hours. They are nocturnal animals. So they don't come out in the day simply because they're hungry, or lost, or disturbed, or to move nests, or are pregnant, or for any other trivial reason. They come out in the day because it's warmer than the night and they are feeling cold. Deadly cold. They're feeling cold because they're so sick they're starting to die, and hypothermia is a stage of dying. Blood has been redirected to the vital organs, keeping them alive as long as possible, leaving the limbs feeling cold. If you see a hedgehog like this, out in the open, in the day time, no matter how 'well' he looks, it is an emergency. Every minute counts. DO NOT put them in a box and keep them, feeding them, not calling a rescue for advice for 3 days until their agony and infection is too much for them to bear and they stop moving. DO NOT feed them then move them under a bush because you think they shouldn't be in the sun, leaving them, utterly defenceless, to be predated alive there. DO NOT take them to a vet, none of whom are trained in wildlife and will simply put to sleep even viable wild animals. Please take them to a rescue (never a vet) URGENTLY. Just Google 'hedgehog rescue near me' to find a list. More info: x.com/HedgehogCabin/…

@foxguardiansuk Poor thing. 😢 We support feed foxes all year round. We’ve had a few with mange over the years but never as bad as that. 🦊

Update on the little mange patient🦊🧡: The good news is that she returned and had a good feed last night. Unfortunately the time she visited, some of the resident juveniles were about, so target- feeding medicated chicken was not possible. However, this is progress and I feel it is only a matter of time until I can treat her. I am patient and persistent. Now I just need some luck! 💫 This clip teaches us a lot about fox behaviour: We can see that foxes are fair. They stand up for their territory but if the other fox submits like the little vixen did by ducking down and making cub-like sounds, then she will be left alone. 💞 The footage featuring a malnourished fox with mange right next to a healthy fox who gets fed daily in my garden, also demonstrates the relevance of supplementary feeding foxes. A fox that has their basic needs met will have a strong immune system and will cope with parasites (like the mites that can cause mange) much better than a malnourished fox. 🍗

"It's not easy, you've got to be prepared to make the commitment." 🧡 Mansfield's Les Hemstock - who was one of the men behind 1980s chart-topper Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers - has been helping stricken foxes for the last seven years. He said the love the animals bring has made the challenges involved with looking after them worthwhile. Recently, Les fulfilled a dying man's wish to see a fox at his care home in a video that went viral.

Wild London David Attenborough I'm getting so many posts from lovely people absolutely outraged at the misinformation regarding hedgehogs and slugs presented on this show yesterday, so I'll just address it here. David Attenbourough is a really lovely man, and has done an immense amount of good for us, our wildlife, and our planet. But he, like any other TV presenter, relies on programme researchers for script content. The researchers, in turn, rely on who they *perceive to be* experts in the field. Unfortunately, they were taken in by some clever branding and chose the wrong people: A self-proclaimed 'hedgehog expert', often funded by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (see their most recent dangerous misinformation, and my response, published here:x.com/HedgehogCabin/…) And the London Wildlife Trust. Recently the London Wildlife Trust engaged me as an expert consultant on a 4 page spread article about hedgehog myths. Many of you have seen my interview, and the draft of the subsequent article. I was sent this draft (see 1st image below) for approval, to which I agreed. However, before going to print, an executive at London Wildlife trust decided to do some editing of his own. It's shocking, I know, and would be unbelievable, if not here in actual print. I've included two versions of the full article below: the first draft approved by me and the team at LWT, and the second actual printed version, after executive 'editing'. It was this same London Wildlife Trust who co-produced the Wild London documentary and "provided expert help and advice". So now you know. We're all shocked. But of course, as usual, it's the poor hedgehogs who will suffer. People won't provide food for our critically endangered hedgehogs, or bother keeping their garden natural and wild, now they've been told that hedgehogs eat slugs. After all, there's plenty of them to go round. Rescues all around the country, who are treating hedgehogs dying of lungworm from being forced through starvation into eating slugs, will feel so demoralised and invalidated. Like you, I'm furious, frustrated, and bone-wearily saddened.

@UberUKI_Support Thank you for your reply. I have no interest in the food, it’s a shame it will go to waste. I will dispose of it if there’s nothing else I can do.

@UberUKI_Support a food order was delivered to my house. No one ordered any food. I don’t recognise the name on the label. The driver had left so I couldn’t tell him. I’m unable to contact you through the app because I haven’t ordered anything.

@UberUKI_Support Why? I haven’t ordered anything so there’s nothing in my account. I want the food to get to the right person, but it’s cold now do they won’t want it. They will have been charged for it though.

So Chris Packham is coming under fire from the pro-hunt brigade yet again because he quite rightly called fox hunters "morally bankrupt sociopathic savages". LIKE this post if you agree with him!

Fireworks. Just don't. Please. It's so cruel. Stress kills wildlife. Please choose, and teach your children, kindness. We have so many ways of entertaining ourselves which don't involve the suffering and death of animals. 🔊

We loathe the use of fireworks, they frighten animals and disturb wildlife and for what?! They’re utterly pointless! Do you agree?

There are still lots of late born hoglets being seen out in the day. Please remember these little babies are sick. They are starting to die so have come out in the day as their failing bodies become hypothermic. No amount of warmth, love, or food will fix them. They need medicines and experienced nursing from a knowledgeable rescue (never a vet). They may seem to pick up once warmed and fed, but whatever was killing them and sent them out in the day, is still killing them. Ironically it's their sweet looks and gentle nature that leads to them being kept. And every minute of delay reduces their chance of survival, even when finally in the very best rescue. They would be so much safer if they were ugly. Please do the right thing - put their needs first and be their ambulance.

@HedgehogCabin Hi Pauly Celeste was crying in the garden next door. She’d been there for a while - no mum. I took her to the rescue in June, she was covered in ticks, also been successfully treated for round and ringworm. Got asked to collect her an hour before I found Conrad. 1 in 1 out! X
