When Big Pharma games the patent system, patients pay the price but there are bipartisan bills in Congress that are smart, practical steps to lower prescription drug prices. By strengthening coordination between the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), we could ensure fewer opportunities for patent manipulation, more transparency in how patents are granted and enforced, and faster access to affordable medications for patients. Americans shouldn’t have to pay more because of bureaucratic silos. Let's ensure the system works for people, not just pharmaceutical companies.

Patents could keep an Ozempic generic off the U.S. market until at least 2031, reintroduced legislation would forbid large health care companies that own PBMs from directly owning pharmacies, and tariffs are reshaping how companies operate, but not addressing the root causes of high drug prices. Brand-name drug companies are manipulating the patent system to keep generics off the market. This ensures drug prices stay high while patients struggle to afford them. Learn more about patent thickets and other Big Pharma schemes at PatientsPushForCompetition.org

According to a recent @KFF poll, 30% of Hispanic adults and 24% of Black adults in the US say they are very worried about being able to afford prescription medications for themselves or their families. For many families from these marginalized communities, concerns about the cost of medication go far beyond a single pharmacy trip and can lead to rationing and delaying medications or choosing not to fill a prescription at all. While recent reforms have helped lower out-of-pocket costs for patients on Medicare in particular, there are still too many families who are struggling to afford the medications they need. There are bipartisan bills in Congress that would lower drug prices for patients, learn more at: PatientsForAffordableDrugsNOW.org

As debate continues around new proposals to lower prescription drug prices for Americans, one thing is clear: the 2022 prescription drug law is already helping to lower costs for millions of patients across the country. As of January 1, 2026, all major provisions of the law are in effect. What began as a series of phased-in reforms has lowered out-of-pocket costs, improved access, and brought greater predictability to millions of Americans. As policymakers look ahead at a time when nine in ten Americans are calling on Congress to do more to lower prescription drug costs, these real-world impacts underscore the importance of building on what’s working and addressing the remaining barriers that keep patients from accessing and affording the medications they need.

Congress is hearing from Big Pharma lobbyists right now. The question is whether they’ll also hear from you... For the past two weeks, patient advocates from across the country flew to D.C. to sit across from lawmakers and deliver a clear message: pass the ETHIC Act. One of them was Maureen, who traveled from Florida. She’d never done anything like this before. She walked into those meetings not knowing what to expect — just knowing she had to try. "These people work for us," she said after. "If we don't try, we might as well throw in the towel." Now we need to back her up. The ETHIC Act targets one of Big Pharma’s most effective delay tactics: filing dozens of duplicative patents on existing drugs to block cheaper generics from reaching patients. It’s legal and deliberate, and it's why so many drugs that should be affordable aren’t. ETHIC would make those patents easier to challenge — and get lower cost alternatives to patients faster. Maureen showed up. Our advocates showed up. Your letter is how you show up. Contact your representative about supporting the ETHIC Act today: tinyurl.com/3bynbf37
