I have always dreamed of getting one of our birds retrapped in Africa. It has finally happened! We ringed this Reed Warbler on the Salisbury Plain in August 2024. It was retrapped this morning 4459km away at Kartong Bird Observatory in The Gambia. A truly brilliant record.

I've had a relapse of my long standing illness. Been in hospital 9 days so far & over the worst although it was another near miss. Told its going to be a very long & slow recovery this time so might not be out & about for some time. Cheers everyone

84 species at Slimbridge today with Samuel, our 2nd highest. New for us there were Jay, Firecrest, Jack Snipe with other goodies of Bean Goose, Bewicks, Whoopers, Little Stint, Med Gull, GW Egret and Mandarin. Missed Treecreeper, Bullfinch 😕 #GlosBirds

Tomorrow 31st January marks the 40th anniversary of the legendary Saltburn Ivory Gull. It stayed until Feb 8th and became one of Cleveland’s most twitched birds ever! I’ve kept these clippings for 40 years in the vain hope I can one day say Ivory Gull Unblocked at…@teesbirds1

@fosterian1971 @teesbirds1 Not surehow I knew about it. Might have been in ceefax or there was a weekly column in one of the nationals (daily star??) that had a round up of rarity news on a Friday. I remember popping into the newsagents in the bus station on a Friday morning to read it. Times have changed!

A wonderful trip to Senegal over the New Year period yielded many top drawer species. Top of that list, for me, was Egyptian Plover which I'd always wanted to see since first seeing it illustrated in a book when I was about 10! Incredible views at Gamadji Sare in the north 😍
