Update: Temporary repairs are being completed overnight and westbound lanes leading to the GWB lower level will reopen by the morning rush hour.

We are continuing to investigate this morning’s incident involving debris falling onto the westbound Trans-Manhattan Expressway approach to the lower level of the George Washington Bridge. All westbound lanes leading to the GWB lower level remain closed while inspections and repairs continue. We expect the closure to remain in place through this evening’s rush hour. Drivers heading toward the 181st Street exit are being diverted via Jerome Avenue and the Major Deegan Expressway. The 181st Street exit remains closed. Motorists should expect significant delays and use alternate routes if possible. Additional updates will be provided as conditions change.

A new way to move is taking flight. Partnering with @jobyaviation, @NYCEDC, and the FAA, the Port Authority of NY & NJ has completed the first electric air taxi demonstration flights between JFK and Manhattan. These piloted eVTOL flights, connecting the airport and the city in under 10 minutes, mark a key step in exploring quieter, cleaner air mobility. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, in partnership with Skyports Drone Services, is launching a yearlong cargo drone trial across the East River. Autonomous drones will transport light cargo, including medical supplies, between Manhattan and the Brooklyn Marine Terminal on scheduled weekday flights. The goal is simple: test a faster, more efficient, and lower-emission alternative to traditional delivery methods. In earlier testing, drone flights completed the trip in about 4 minutes, compared to up to 20 minutes by road, highlighting the potential to reduce congestion while improving delivery times. This trial reflects a broader shift toward rethinking how cities move goods, leveraging airspace, not just roadways, to build a more sustainable and resilient transportation network. Beginning Tuesday, April 21 at 11 p.m., the Lincoln Tunnel Expressway will close on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday overnights through August to support construction tied to the Midtown Bus Terminal Replacement project. During these overnight closures, New Jersey-bound drivers must use 10th Avenue or 11th Avenue to access the tunnel. The overnight roadway closure will help facilitate steel erection for the Dyer Avenue Deck Overs, which will become publicly accessible open space after completion of the Midtown Bus Terminal Replacement project.
