UCSD PATHS Program

This quarter, Emme, Associate Director of the PATHS Program, hosted a workshop centered on self-advocacy. Scholars gathered to define self-advocacy and explore how we can best practice this framework in college and beyond. Here's to continuing to advocate for yourselves, PATHS!

This quarter, the PATHS Program hosted the GUIDES Mentorship Program & Alumni Mixer at the Game Room on campus for scholars to gather for an evening of fun and community. This event provided a space for scholars to build connections with mentors and alumni in the program.

PATHS Scholars Gaby Marcial and P6 Marie Joe Franci presented on the NSF's REU program. Gaby detailed her marine ecology research at the University of Washington, and Marie Joe discussed her nanoscale immunoengineering work through the SURE program at Columbia University.

On February 7th, pre-med PATHS Scholars attended the Medical Education for Diverse Students Conference at UC San Diego. The conference provided our scholars with foundational tools for success and covered every component of the application process.

Throwback to fall quarter when our PATHs Scholars: Michelle Gomez, Brianna Newton, and Kathy Nguyen, presented their neuroscience research at the Society for Neuroscience Conference in San Diego!

Last month, P5 scholar Gaby Marcial presented her research on the dietary consequences of invasive Sargassum seaweed on the graceful kelp crab (Pugettia gracilis) at the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) Conference.

Shout out to Project OnRamp Manager, Azareel Canizales, for partnering with PATHS and presenting upcoming opportunities for our STEM scholars. Project OnRamp is an organization that increases undergraduates' access to paid summer internships at biotech and biopharma companies.

On January 26, PATHS hosted our 3rd Annual Networking event, connecting PATHS scholars with faculty, staff, community partners, and industry leaders. The event provided a valuable space for scholars to network and learn about diverse career and academic paths.

PATHS hosted a Research Industry Panel featuring PATHS Scholars Kathy Nguyen, Andrea Balcan, and Amy Nguyen, who shared their summer internship experiences. Thank you Kathy, Andrea, and Amy for sharing your wisdom in navigating research opportunities!

Last week, Lorena Quiroz, Associate Director of Physical Sciences at the Career Services Center, hosted a workshop on LinkedIn, resumes, and cover letters for PATHS Scholars. Shout out to Lorena for explaining the critical dos and don'ts to become a competitive applicant.

Last month, PATHS and CASP scholars had the opportunity to attend an industry tour at General Atomics, a defense and technology company specializing in unmanned aircraft and automated airborne surveillance systems. Thank you, General Atomics, for this incredible opportunity!

Congratulations to PATHS Scholars Brianna Newton and Amy Nguyen for presenting their research at the Janelia Research Campus Conference through the Janelia Undergraduate Science Training program.

On September 18-19, PATHS Program Director, Guadalupe Fernandez, and PATHS Associate Director, Emmeline Domingo, attended the San Diego Fundraising Conference at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. This event brought together national fundraising experts and nonprofit professionals.

Throwback to August when PATHS Scholars Kaitlyn & George presented at the Project Onramp Internship Showcase, an organization aiming to provide students with career and summer internship opportunities. Congratulations George and Kaitlyn on your successful summer internships!

Shout out to PATHS Scholar, Nhi, for receiving the Undergraduate Student Award at UC San Diego’s API Heritage Celebration! This award was given to honorary undergraduate students that demonstrated a commitment to raising educational awareness on the AAPI community here at UCSD!

Shout out to Dr. Abhishek Saha, a professor at UC San Diego in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, for presenting his research in fluid dynamics, combustion, and the fundamental physics of engineering systems to our PATHS Scholars!

Shout out to PATHS Scholars Kathy and Andrea for starting their summer internship at @ljiresearch this week! They were welcomed into the LJIdea Program with a white coat ceremony where they met fellow interns and mentors!
