Every now and then, there are interesting exceptions within Mexican cinema. This year, "The Nahual Ritual" is one of these offerings. Set in rural Mexico in the 1960s, it stands out for its atmosphere as well as its attempt to reclaim an iconic fantastical being from Mexican popular culture. Although the plot is a bit slow, its third act leaves no one indifferent. It's a good way to elucidate the rural beliefs of indigenous Mexican communities as well as a critique of the omnipresent lack of justice in Mexico.
