New Brain Mapping Tool Reveals Detailed Neuronal Connections Researchers have developed a groundbreaking neurotechnology called START, which combines transcriptomics and viral tracing to map precise neuronal connections in the brain. This new tool enables scientists to distinguish between different subtypes of inhibitory neurons and their specific connections with excitatory neurons in the cortex. The ability to map these connections at such a detailed level offers new insights into how brain circuits function and opens the door for more targeted therapeutic approaches. The study found distinct connectivity patterns among various inhibitory neuron subtypes, which could not have been observed with previous methods. These findings are especially relevant for developing treatments for neurological conditions, as targeting specific neuron subtypes may lead to more effective therapies. The research marks a significant step toward better understanding brain circuitry and developing precision medicine for brain disorders. Image: Salk Institute

Anxiety Raises Dementia Risk A recent study finds that chronic and new onset anxiety are associated with a significantly higher risk of developing dementia. The research, conducted over 10 years with 2,132 participants aged around 76, showed that individuals with chronic or new anxiety had 2.8 and 3.2 times higher risk of dementia, respectively. Notably, those whose anxiety resolved did not face increased dementia risk, highlighting the potential importance of managing anxiety for dementia prevention. 1/3

Six Types of Depression Identified Researchers identified six depression subtypes through brain imaging and machine learning, revealing tailored treatment options. This breakthrough in precision psychiatry can improve treatment outcomes by matching patients with the most effective therapies based on their brain activity patterns. The study aims to move beyond the trial-and-error method of prescribing antidepressants. This personalized approach could revolutionize mental health care by ensuring the right treatment is chosen the first time. 1/3

In people w/ Alzheimer's, blood vessels are tortuous and irregular just like what we reported in tau models in 2018. In our new work, we show that there's a lot more perivascular tau than previously thought. Read about clear brains + vascular tau here: link.springer.com/article/10.100…

Brain Chemistry Sheds Light on Overeating and Memory Fruit flies use the neurotransmitter octopamine to decide whether food memories are stored long-term or short-term. This process, influenced by energy reserves, affects future eating behavior. High glycogen levels result in stable food memories, prompting increased food intake even after fasting. The research suggests that similar mechanisms may influence overeating in humans. 1/3
