The PFF raises deep concerns over the current state of governance and the increasing militarization of our public life.
The recent order by Mr. Museveni to release UGX 56BN for LC I elections is a direct violation of institutional independence. If the electoral commission must wait for a presidential directive to use funds appropriated by Parliament then it is no longer an independent body. The EC must immediately release clear guidelines for first-time voters and a definitive election roadmap otherwise this is a delay tactic to disenfranchise the young voters.
For four weeks, heavy military roadblocks have caused unnecessary delays and undue policing in the Kampala Metropolitan Area. Citizens deserve to know the specific security threats justifying these searches and security operations should not come at the cost of human rights and psychological intimidation.
We condemn the militaristic and barbaric evictions of hardworking Ugandans. The government must provide conducive alternative spaces. Destroying property and exposing goods to theft is unacceptable. Fines and structured closures should replace brute force.
The regime must respect the people of Uganda. We demand institutional transparency, an end to the policing by fear, and the protection of every citizen’s right to work and vote.
