Due to hazardous weather conditions, the Prince George’s County government has announced optional liberal leave and unscheduled telework for non-essential County employees.  All essential employees are required to report as scheduled.  Employees must notify supervisors of their intent to use liberal leave and telework. Today, Friday, July 17, 2026, widespread smoke is impacting the Washington, DC, and Maryland region. The National Weather Service has issued a Code Purple Air Quality Alert for these areas. A Code Purple Air Quality Alert means the air is very unhealthy. The level of pollution often comes from heavy wildfire smoke and poses a severe health risk, and everyone is likely to experience adverse health effects. Health Risk & Symptoms include: Coughing and scratchy throat Stinging or burning eyes Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing What to Do: Stay Indoors – avoid all outdoor physical exertion and postpone any outdoor activities unless medically necessary Seal Your Home – Keep windows closed and recirculate your AC settings Drive Safely – keep car windows rolled up and turn on your vehicle’s air conditioning to recirculate mode The safety and well-being of our employees remain our highest priority.

It only takes 12 inches of rushing water to carry away a small car, and you completely lose steering control the moment your tires lose contact with the road. If you encounter a flooded street: do not try to guess the depth, do not assume your truck or SUV can handle it, and TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN! Your life is worth more than a shortcut.
