@AlrxCox I’ll gladly opt out, if I can invest my NI payments independently. This would give me the ring fenced pot that the state pension should already be.

There are 2 common arguments under this post: 1. “We paid in for a pension at the end”. No you didn’t, the state pension, like every other benefit, is paid entirely by today’s national insurance contributions. You never paid into a ring fenced “pension pot”. Baby boomers are also getting ~120-130% out compared to what they paid in. 2. “Is your solution to just make OAPs suffer then?” No, obviously not, the simple and fiscally responsible answer to the triple lock is to change state pension eligibility from universal to those who are in genuine need of it. No more millionaires getting a top up from people who get £20,000 a year, it should be exclusively for pensioners who can’t live without it.
Alex Cox@AlrxCox

The triple lock is honestly one of the worst policies ever thought of. Many of the people who say the benefits bill is too high are the ones making up 48% of it. That’s £150.7 billion so people who had the easiest housing ladder, the best savings rates and the best private pension rates can get a bigger pension than they ever paid in for. It’s a joke of a policy and I wholeheartedly disagree with it.

@BWoodzy99 Then let’s fix this by ring fencing NI payments and investing to pay state pensions. You are endeavouring to rationalise the actions of governments so desperate for money that they break simple social contracts

Your taxes (including NI) didnt pay into a state pension they paid for day to day spending, you have no automatic right to one The current non-means tested triple lock pension is both unaffordable and immoral. Time to get a grip.

@TheSoloMiningCo 48 panels!!! Nice work on the install. Have you waded through the G99 application too? Mine took a while to fill out but my DNO were incredibly helpful

I would like to think that years in the live events and electrical installation business has trained me well enough..! I'm rather pleased with this one! Last week I Installed a 6kw solar array with a 314ah battery backup at my place in the UK. 48 more 500w panels and another 3 batteries due tomorrow. Electricity bills: GFY. Self sovereign mining: LFG!

@FollowTheScien4 @sarah_go_green @OctopusEnergy Why does Sarah need to do that? Running without the grid for ~200 days a year means less imports of fossil fuels & as more people do this, national fuel stores can last longer helping to buffer price spikes.

Solar panels save some gas. But they will never save all gas on their own in the winter. If you want to demonstrate energy independence, disconnect from the electricity and gas grids and run entirely on solar and batteries. This would be a worthwhile demonstration of the efficacy of your ideas.

Rooftop solar makes so much sense. ☀️⛅️ The sun keeps rising day after day even in Costa del Wales.🙌⚡️😍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿👀 Solar actually works great outside the summer months. 424 kWh so far this month. Energy independence straight from your roof. @OctopusEnergy installed mine, highly recommended! £100 off - Read my review. octopusreferral.link/solar-panels-i…

@RaySand17710097 It’s already fully available online from China and UK sellers. People can also already self install the exact same kit under G98 using an isolator and receive paperwork from their DNO making it all official. The only real change is making it acceptable to connect using a plug.

@pgh Yes EACH ONE is 800W (n.b. that is 1.1hp i.e. quite a lot) so what is to limit installation to just 1? Think about it...this is DIY gear possibly from the centre aisle at Lidl or worse online from China.

I have just heard that "plug in" solar is to be authorised in the UK. FFS the lunatics really have taken over the assylum. How many politicians/civil servants know the difference between a ring main and a radial spur circuit? My Advice? Invest in undertakers

@aNorthernGarden @RaySand17710097 The DC from the panel goes to a microinverter than is part of the kit. That inverter only feeds AC once it senses the grid and synchronises to tbr frequency. The anti islanding means no grid = no power from inverter.

@RaySand17710097 I've been wondering which socket I can plug it into and what will happen when the dc from the panel and the ac mains meet. I think it will be necessary to click the switch with a very long insulating pole and have the fire brigade standing by. 😄

@Artemisfornow Works well in Germany, lets anybody prop some panels up and make useful electricity that will reduce their grid use. Struggling to see an issue with this (and I’m really not a fan of our present energy policy)

Ed’s new plan is plug in solar. Significant reductions is misinformation. Average kit costs £300-£600. It will take 3-7 years to pay back that cost in energy bill reduction. BUT … the plug in solar only has a 2 year warranty at best. All made in China using coal and oil 🤡

@DRSunlocked They were under no threat from behind, equally the Ferrari wasn’t able to challenge the Mercedes 1-2. What they do have now though is two drivers with experience of continuous wheel to wheel batting with the 2026 toolset.

Everyone was saying how great the battle was between the Ferraris.... I just looked at it and thought how stupid they were being. George was waiting there with his full energy to overtake them both when they used all theirs up squabbling and then disappeared up the road. It offers an exciting looking product, look any deeper than the surface however, and you just how fake it is. 🎥: Formulytics

Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) drops legal challenge in free speech row. In January, the High Court ruled that PFEW acted unlawfully in suspending PC Rick Prior and PS Richard Cooke — two democratically elected Federation chairs — and banning one from seeking re-election over remarks made on GB News and social media. The Court found the suspensions, and the restrictions on their ability to stand for office, unjustified, disproportionate and in breach of their Article 10 rights under the European Convention on Human Rights. Judges also emphasised that elected representatives must be able to comment on matters of public interest — including race relations, policing standards and officer confidence. Both officers did exactly that and were punished. The PFEW initially launched a legal challenge against the High Court ruling but has now dropped it, days after its Chief Executive, Mukund Krishna, was arrested and suspended as part of an unrelated corruption investigation. We were proud to have supported PC Prior and PS Cooke throughout this process. Read more below 👇

Ofcom wrote today, harassing 4chan again about the fine for engaging in perfectly lawful conduct in the US. We replied with a hamster. When Ofcom wants to get serious and have a merits discussion about their powers, they can show up in a US court as a plaintiff.

The tax gap (total tax avoided and evaded) for the UK in 2023-20224 was £46,800,000,000. It's not teachers or nurses avoiding tax. It's not people on PIP. It's not asylum seekers. It's the rich. It's the billionaires. Its Nigel Farage. It's the Tories.

@graeme_cobb Our second car is a model 3 with ~300 miles. It’s awesome. To replace my diesel, I’d need it to be able to drive 140 miles to Heathrow, sit for a week and then get me straight home after a red eye. It can’t do that. So 400 miles, more if I’m using sentry mode while parked.

Getting aside the mistakes - accepting some serious failures of judgement @Keir_Starmer has integrity & a deep sense of serving the country rather than pursuing his own self interest. Those 2 qualities should not be forgotten by his #Labour colleagues. #Starmer needs a fundamental reset, the offer of a clear vision of the country he seeks to change & the offer of hope to voters increasingly sick of all mainstream politicians.
