@dr_uche_bee That’s always been part of my training and teaching, but my fellow residents and I have noticed that shift towards first names more recently as well.

@dr_uche_bee Not at all. Addressing all attendings by Dr. regardless of gender demonstrates respect, but also encourages patients to show respect too. Particularly for new-in-practice physicians and women, where they may get completely overlooked.

Recenty, a few of our medical students have referred to me over e-mail or in person by my first name. I wasn’t sure if this had to do with millennial culture, but I quickly correct them since we are not peers. I admit sometimes I wonder if I am being too conservative. Thoughts?

10 yrs ago, I walked in to a pts room at 3 am to prep for his heart transplant. Pt looked at me & said “Nope. You’re not taking care of me. I don’t believe in women doctors.” The CT surg IMMEDIATELY said, “she’s the best. If you don’t take her, you don’t get me.” #heforshe
