In May, HSA seniors participated in a two-day, one-night team-building retreat at Camp Brandeis in Simi Valley. During the trip, students engaged in a variety of collaborative activities, including team-building exercises, the alpine tower ropes course, rock climbing, and a boat-building and racing challenge. The experience provided an opportunity for students to strengthen peer connections and reflect on their shared academy journey as they prepared for graduation the next week.

At the conclusion of the Epidemiology unit, HSA juniors completed a hands-on lab simulating a healthcare clinic environment. In this activity, students assumed the roles of healthcare providers and patients. Healthcare providers conducted patient interviews, engaged in clinical communication, and practiced relevant clinical skills. Based on their assessments, they identified the patient’s disease and developed an appropriate plan of care, reinforcing key concepts from the unit through experiential learning.

HSA Juniors had the opportunity to visit Rio School Farms on September 27, as part of the OUHSD Farm to School program. During their visit, students learned about regenerative farming practices, participated in the harvesting of fresh fruits and vegetables, and contributed to a mulch project. Students also were able to interact with various farm animals at the site. This hands-on experience provided them with valuable insights into the workings of a farm. Throughout the year, Rio School Farms hosts field trips for students, similar to the one attended by HSA Juniors. The farm also plays a vital role in supporting the school cafeteria by providing fresh produce, enhancing the nutritional offerings for students. Furthermore, Rio School Farms collaborates with community partners to help address food insecurity in Oxnard, demonstrating its commitment to supporting local residents.
