@MillerDakotaJ If the story is told, and you believe it's complete, then that's the correct word count. My books get super long because I have a lot of secondary plots that I thread through the main plot, and I rely on a pacing scheme rather than worrying about act structure.

How are some of you able to write 100k words for your books? Does the story require it, is it the world building, are there that many events? I ask because I'm sitting on 32k words and the story is told. I'm considering a sequel but the themes don't match, which is why I haven't added that into this story. I thought about trying to add more to the story but anything else would, in my opinion, be fluff.

@timmckay52 I queried first, and the responses and revisions I was asked for would have completely obliterated my voice and my intentions for my stories, so I went self-publish to get around the gatekeeping and let the audience decide if they enjoyed it too.

I keep getting asked why I never queried and self-published from the start. Each time, I find myself less sure how to answer. I may very well query my next series. Any other indies wrestling with this?
