@CliffordAsness Dr. Asness, I think the argument is PM's or BTC vs. owning stocks. Bonds are hard to logically swallow when sovereign debt levels are like this. Companies generate cash flow. Gold has tradition. I largely agree on BTC at this point. But owning TSLA is not really any less meme.

@dampedspring Disagree. Gold is undervalued. So is silver. Sovereign bonds are junk unless QE starts in addition to the constant printing endless debt rollovers cause.

The great failure of 60/40 and risk parity was holding bonds at ZIRP "for portfolio diversification benefit". Pricing matters. Today Gold and commodities have saved every portfolio that was smart enough to hold them. Daily you hear about the essential need for holding these assets "for portfolio diversification benefit" At DampedSpring we are currently quite concerned that pricing matters and these assets are now priced like bonds at ZIRP

Have investors gotten richer last six months? Has the treasury changed its issuance strategy recently Do real economy participants need to access capital markets for proposed growth initiatives or are they able to self fund. What is the scale of the funding need to achieve the proposed growth That's what you need to answer to trade markets. NOT parsing recent data.

@dampedspring GOOG is probably in this same boat in a way - most external capacity can eventually be consumed by itself. So external deals just reduce the cost ultimately born by GOOG long term. YouTube, Android, GSuite, Search, GPhotos - all massive, massive ROI opps.

$META is an interesting case. Make a massive compute investment entirely for internal needs. Unlike virtually any of the big data center spend which in other cases is partly internal and partly to rent to others, META ROI seems entirely based on increase earnings from Insta, FB, WA and wearables. I find it interesting because it's more a pure play on compute for profit than LLM slop for clicks
