Europe’s governing parties are imploding as populists surge and working-class voters defect. Democrats face the same choice as Labour: chase progressive purity or rebuild a broad coalition around credible economic solutions. @Will_PPI argues Democrats must offer working Americans common ground on living costs, immigration, and crime to isolate MAGA extremists and win back the majority. thehill.com/opinion/campai…

.@ppi CEO Lindsay Mark Lewis: “@RepSmucker’s Protecting American Streaming and Innovation Act charts a smart and effective path, engaging Congress in support of a US ‘Section 301’ investigation of the OSA regulations. Strong, united, coordinated, bipartisan action ... would put Canada and our trading partners around the world on notice that we expect trade agreements to be followed and will not tolerate discriminatory policies that single out American firms for unfair and burdensome regulation.”

Today, PPI urged the House Ways and Means Committee to act on discriminatory Canadian regulations targeting American streaming services. Canada just announced a massive new tax under the guise of protecting local content. Here’s the problem: it violates USMCA, and could cost consumers $7B over five years. progressivepolicy.org/wp-content/upl…

Congress needs to act on the Protecting American Streaming and Innovation Act and trigger a Section 301 investigation. The U.S. can’t let this stand, and other countries are watching. If Canada gets away with this, expect a wave of copycat taxes on American digital services worldwide. That’s a losing game for innovation and consumers.

Canada’s argument: American platforms crowd out local programming. Reality check: Streaming services have invested more in global content than ever before. One French show, “Lupin,” generated 90M euros for France’s economy and employed 600 local vendors.

As Americans prepare to honor those who died in service, three young voices reflect on what patriotism means today. In essays curated by @RickKahlenberg, authors Jaxon Shealy, Ed Weinberg, and Armond Halbert explore how ordinary citizenship sustains American democracy. progressivepolicy.org/what-it-means-…

Advanced recycling could keep 6.6 million tons of plastic waste out of landfills every year. @stumalec examines how scaling this technology could boost waste diversion rates and save municipalities hundreds of millions in tipping fees annually. progressivepolicy.org/the-waste-dive…

Conventional recycling captures just 9% of America’s plastic waste. Advanced recycling technology can break down plastics that mechanical systems cannot, including flexible films and contaminated materials. @stumalec argues the U.S. could increase plastic diversion rates to 19–23% while saving municipalities $230–$328 million annually in landfill fees. progressivepolicy.org/the-waste-dive…

This week's Trade Fact: @CommerceGov's April "232" decree puts 25% "national security" tariff on coffins. As they drive up coffin prices, DoC is unwittingly speeding the public's shift away from burial to cremation & endangering US casket-making future. progressivepolicy.org/u-s-coffin-pri…

ICYMI: Coffin prices in America are up roughly $100 over the past year, driven largely by the Trump administration’s steel tariffs. @EBGresser explains how tariffs intended to protect domestic manufacturing are instead accelerating the shift toward cremation and hastening the decline of American casket-makers. progressivepolicy.org/u-s-coffin-pri…

.@ppi’s Diana Moss via @JakeLahut: “This is an enormous diversion away from the Live Nation - Ticketmaster monopoly ... Don’t look over here at the monopoly, look over there at the resale market. Let’s call the resale market a bunch of scalpers, make unsubstantiated claims about how it functions, and lay the blame at the feet of the resale market.”
Jake Lahut@JakeLahut

Dems have talked a big game about fighting back against Ticketmaster's monopoly, but the behemoth and its parent company Live Nation have quietly been waging an all-out blitz in state legislatures as they awaited trial. A primer on that playbook: straightfromthehut.substack.com/p/ticketmaster…

School districts chasing technological silver bullets miss what actually works. According to new research, high-performing districts focus on literacy, instructional consistency, teacher coaching, accountability, and human connection. In @Forbes, @rachelanncanter shows that real change requires sustained investment and intentional system alignment. forbes.com/sites/lisacham…

Algorithmic pricing and innovation can expand consumer choice, lower costs, and reduce waste. But bad regulation risks pushing America toward a one-size-fits-all economy. @MichaelMandel argues for smart guardrails, like Maryland’s Protection from Predatory Pricing Act, that preserve beneficial practices and limit harm to consumers. progressivepolicy.org/algorithmic-pr…
