In a new joint op-ed by Former U.S. Secretary of Education @arneduncan and Learning Heroes’ CEO & Founder @BibbHubbard, a clear message emerges: if we want better attendance and stronger outcomes, we have to start with families. In Chicago, roughly 40% of students are chronically absent. While there are lots of reasons for absenteeism, new research from Learning Heroes and @TNTP shows that schools with strong family engagement see better attendance and stronger academic performance. That's why our finding that nearly 9 in 10 parents believe their child is on grade level, while far fewer students actually are, is a clarion call for schools and families to team up around a shared understanding of student progress. When families have a clear picture of their child’s progress, they're more likely to understand the urgency around attendance, as well as their child’s reading and math skills. The path forward is clear: • Engage families as equal partners and build trusting relationships • Connect regularly with families and focus on learning • Make family engagement a core strategy for achieving school and student goals Better outcomes often start with policy, but they come to life through partnerships.
