#world: Hydrogen Enhances Warming A new study in the journal Nature provides insights on the role of hydrogen emissions in advancing climate change. By itself, hydrogen does not behave as a greenhouse gas, but it can bind with compounds in the atmosphere known as hydroxyl radicals. Hydroxyl radicals act as an atmospheric detergent by binding with methane, rendering it no longer capable of contributing to warming. Increasing hydrogen emissions use up the available hydroxyl radicals, making less available to bind with methane and giving atmospheric methane more time to act as a greenhouse gas before breaking up through other mechanisms. Climate scientists believe increasing levels of atmopheric hydrogen have indirectly contributed to 0.02°C of global warming.
