🚨 JAPAN TSUNAMI ALERTS DOWNGRADED — BUT WHY KYUSHU IS DIFFERENT
A powerful earthquake
(M7.4–7.7) struck off Japan’s Sanriku coast—one of the most tsunami-prone regions in the country.
Alerts have now been downgraded, but evacuations were still advised in parts of northern Japan.
📍 So what about here in Kyushu?
This is actually one of the reasons I chose to base myself in Fukuoka…
➡️ Northeast Japan (like Sanriku) sits directly on a major subduction zone
➡️ That’s where Japan’s largest earthquakes + tsunamis originate
➡️ It’s open to the Pacific → nothing blocking wave energy
🌏 Kyushu is different:
✔️ Not directly on that same Pacific megathrust
✔️ More influenced by inland fault systems
✔️ Hakata Bay is shallow and semi-enclosed, which helps reduce tsunami impact
But here’s the part that matters most—
⚠️ Lower risk is NOT no risk
Kyushu has seen major earthquakes before (Kumamoto 2016), and inland shaking can still be significant.
💡 The real difference is the TYPE of risk: • Northeast Japan → Big tsunami + megathrust earthquakes
• Kyushu → Inland quakes, heavy rain, flooding, landslides
—
🧭 BOTTOM LINE Fukuoka/Kyushu is generally a lower tsunami risk region compared to northeastern Japan…
…but staying prepared still matters—just for different hazards.

Look at the feet and posture:
Couple 1 (blue): Close together, but a bit neutral.
Couple 2 (green): Slight distance + body angle feels less connected.
Couple 3 (red): Walking very close, but not much physical connection.
Couple 4 (yellow): Arms linked + walking in sync → strongest sign of closeness and comfort.
👉 Answer: Couple 4
They’re physically connected, relaxed, and moving together — classic “in sync” energy.

🏁🇯🇵 SUPER EXCITED FOR MY FIRST JAPAN F1 RACE AT SUZUKA!
It’s about a 4-hour ride on the Shinkansen from Fukuoka 🚅 — and at ~200 mph, it’s basically the closest I’ll get to F1 speed before race day🚗
Weather looks pretty typical for this time of year — a mix of clouds and some showers 🌦️ — but honestly… the early cherry blossoms 🌸 make it all worth it.
Suzuka + sakura + Formula 1 = let’s go 🙌

Here's the full edited video of last night's water rescue at Haskell's Beach. A 26 y/o surfer got swept out by high surf after losing his board, but his friend reported it immediately and he clung to a lobster trap buoy until help arrived.
SB County Fire's shore search found the board, drones with infrared located him 1/4 mile offshore, and rescue swimmers brought him safely back. Evaluated on the beach—no medical attention needed, released on scene.
Grateful for the quick-thinking friend, our dedicated SBC Fire teams, and life-saving drone tech.

Water rescue Haskell’s Beach 6:28pm. A 26 y/o male surfer was swept away from shore by powerful high surf after losing his board. He was surfing with a friend, who reported him missing immediately-quick action that made a huge difference .
The surfer managed to grab onto a lobster trap buoy and held on while waiting rescue.
An initial shore search by Santa Barbara County Fire Department personnel located the missing surfer’s surfboard washed up on the beach, confirming the situation.
Fire Department teams then deployed aerial drones with infrared cameras to scan the ocean, spotting him about 1/4 mile offshore. Rescue swimmers swam out, made contact under real-time drone operator guidance, and safely escorted him back to shore.
Firefighter/Paramedics evaluated him on the beach-he did not require medical attention and was released.
Thanks to the quick thinking friend, our dedicated SBC Fire teams and the life-saving drone technology.
Safety reminder: Never go in to the ocean alone-especially in rough conditions. It can save lives.
