Happy 87th Birthday to Sir Ian McKellen! 🧙‍♂️ 🎂 He masterfully portrayed Gandalf, one of the most legendary characters in Tolkien’s Middle-earth, in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. When Sir Ian McKellen received the role offer from Peter Jackson, he had never read The Lord of the Rings. He only knew The Hobbit. After accepting the role, he kept the books with him throughout the filming process, constantly reading them and using them as a reference to preserve the authenticity of the character and the scenes. Later, in order to fully understand the role of Gandalf and capture the spirit of the series, he listened to J.R.R. Tolkien’s own recordings and speeches, basing Gandalf’s accent, tone, and mannerisms on Tolkien’s real speaking style. Sir Ian McKellen was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), and although he deserved the award, he did not win it, one of the greatest injustices done to him. But for us, he will always remain one of the most legendary actors in film history.
