Energy prices in the UK rose because gas prices rose as a result of the conflict in Ukraine. The UK's electricity production is disproportionately reliant on gas compared to other European countries. The price of electricity is pegged to the price of gas. This means that even if electricity is produced by cheaper renewables, it has to be sold at the price of gas-produced electricity. The reason bills are so high in the UK is because the wholesale price of gas is so high, and we're overreliant on it. Electricity from renewables is much, much cheaper. But the energy system doesn't allow us to take advantage of that fact. Green levies are a minuscule proportion of the overall cost of energy bills compared to the wholesale price
