It was pleasure to speak today with my friend, His Excellency Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China, on the evolving situation in the West Asia. We reaffirmed the need to restore peace and stability in the Middle East and the wider region. We agreed to support all efforts aimed at ensuring an immediate end to hostilities, resumption of peace talks, protection of non-combatants, security of shipping lanes, and adherence to the UN Charter. FM Wang Yi conveyed China’s appreciation and support to Pakistan for its ongoing efforts in this regard. We also agreed to continue our endeavours for the resolution of all disputes through dialogue and diplomacy.

According to the 2nd clause of the Bangladesh National Liberation Order 1973, no lawsuit can be filed against Mukti Bahini for any act committed from March 1 to December 16, 1971. Interestingly, Yahya’s military action started on March 25. Then why did Bangladesh include those 25 days? President Yahya called the assembly session on March 3, 1971, in Dhaka as per the demand of Mujib ur Rehman, but he postponed it at the eleventh hour following the refusal of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. Bhutto wanted to ensure that Mujib would not incorporate his ‘Six Points’ into the constitution, as per the pre-election understanding. Between March 2 and March 26, 1971 (the day on which military action was initiated), in East Pakistan there were killings, burning, looting, ambushing, brickbatting, and molestation of non-Bengalis by militants of the Awami League. Some sources put the number of Biharis and West Pakistanis killed by militants of the Awami League at 100,000, including 15,000 at Santahar, 10,000 at Chittagong, and 2,000 at Mymensingh. Their shops were gutted, houses looted, women taken away and raped, and bodies mutilated. The strength of the military at this time was 15,000. After all the mayhem, Yahya initiated Operation Searchlight on March 25. The strength of the military till the fall of Dhaka was: Army = 34,000 (23,000 infantrymen) Navy = 3,000 PAF = 200 Civil Armed Forces and West Pakistan Police = 5,100 Rudolph Rummel estimates that 150,000 Biharis were massacred by the vengeful victors of Mukti Bahini in a brutal bloodletting in 1971. Mujib ur Rehman, the Bangabandhu, supported the brutal killings by his own Mukti Bahini.
