With #NAPC2024 in the books, I'm back in the collection on Thursdays. Today's find: the wonderfully weird Silurian diploporitan echinoderm Gomphocystites sp. (UMMP 76420).

Same problem different year. Occupants at the @UMich @umichLSA Research Museums Center continue to watch drivers being trained, while being excluded from bus service.

@DrPardi @Paleowin @MarysRevenge Yup! And often you end up in difficult positions with PIs, admins, etc. These situations tend to be more complicated than necessary- often due to misunderstandings !

@PaleoJB @Paleowin @MarysRevenge In this scenario I am describing, that student decided to take the sample with him elsewhere without revising the loan agreement, and I'm now in an incredibly annoying position of having to deal with it because people want to just do what the hell ever they feel like.

I also have fossils at my house as I live 2 hours away from their repository and I can see pretty easily how if the museum decided they didn't like me, that could be painted as 'stealing.'

@Paleowin @MarysRevenge I hope this is making sense. If the repository that loaned you material is OK with it and you have the legal issues worked that’s awesome. But if not, it would be effectively considered theft like w/ what’s going on now with Bobby & Sarah.

@Paleowin @MarysRevenge I’m not trying to argue or cause problems, Win. But, for example, if you were in violation of a loan agreement from where I work - the regents and their legal team are within their right to take action against you for holding their property.

@incisorial @PerAhlberg1 @Paleowin @MarysRevenge Yes, I think there’s a miscommunication. There is no issue loaning to people at institutions , that’s why I asked for a clarification. The loan is still not to the individual it is to the inst. for legal reasons. It’s important that everyone read & understand the loan docs.

@Paleowin @MarysRevenge Win- that was not at all what I was saying and I am sorry that’s how it was interpreted. I was asking you to clarify because I simply didn’t understand. Any institution can loan material from the repository I work at (incl high schools, non profits, community centers).

@PaleoJB @MarysRevenge So, if you’re not at a big fancy institution you can’t get fossils on loan? Read that again. I’m at a community college so I can’t do science is what you’re saying.

@Paleowin @MarysRevenge Not sure I understand being “barred” from studying if you can’t get to a repository, can you clarify? I can see it being not possible if you don’t have an institution and therefore would need a loan to you/another org vs an employer.

@Paleowin @MarysRevenge Obviously, I can’t speak for all repositories but you should have paperwork that says the specimens are loaned to you for work in your home. Then no problem. UMMP only loans to institutions and specimens are not allowed to be in personal residences (exceptions happen but rarely).
