Eight years is a long time in the life of a tree, but a heartbeat in the memory of a city. On Saturday, 28th October 2017, I stood on the dusty shoulder of Kira Road. I had a shovel in one hand and my daughter, Zoe, in the other. She was barely two then, a tiny, curious Valentine’s baby, born on the day of love, oblivious to the fact that we were digging holes for a future she hadn’t yet grown into. We were there with the Rotary Club of Kampala Metropolitan @KampalaMetro, doing what Rotarians do: sweating for a cause, dirt under our fingernails, dreaming of a greener Kampala. I passed by Kira Road today. Easter Sunday. The city is currently a theater of orange cones and heavy machinery. Usually, when the graders arrive, the greenery is the first to go. But as I drove that stretch from Kamwokya Market all the way to the Kira Road Police Station lights, I saw them. Our trees. They haven't just survived; they’ve thrived. There is a quiet, soul deep pleasure in seeing that your efforts weren't in vain. The new road design didn't just ignore them; it embraced them, allowing them to remain in the island, standing tall amidst the progress. I have to tip my hat to KCCA @KCCAUG and the road designers, it takes a certain kind of vision to build a road without killing the soul of the street. Once this road is complete, that stretch is going to be quite a sight. As my Governor @GKitakule @dgrotaryd9213 says, Rotary Eyamba. ‘We help. We build. We beautify. Maybe it’s time we put up a sign so the public knows who planted this shade, but the real reward is the shade itself the beauty the greening. We desire a better future for our children, so we must teach them the language of the earth. We plant today so they can breathe tomorrow. Zoe is older now. The trees are taller. And Kampala, despite the construction noise, feels a little more like home always been home. Happy Easter, folks. And if you have a moment, plant a tree. Do it for the children. #RotaryEyamba
