@ALucieSmith @holysmoke Fr Alexander, in addressing (arch)bishops, the law (Ut sive sollicite, 1969) and the custom in E&W (and in Scotland) have differed for a very long time.

@holysmoke Wilson is ten years younger than Moth, and thus a potential successor to him at Westminster.

Roche’s only real commitment has been to his own career prospects. Under different popes he’d have been muttering the canon with a maniple swinging from his arm, or dressing up in his old skater’s sequins – whatever earns him brownie points (or, better still, brownies).
Scott Smith@hf_222222

The thing about Desiderio Desideravi, is it basically had a reform of the reform vibe, but there isn't really a constituency for that these days. Not even Roche himself is committed to it, so its left in limbo, & its unclear how it could ever take root.

@BO3673 Why? Since the end of the Cold War the Tories have done far more damage to Defence than Labour.

Last month saw the Royal Artillery formally bring in two new weapons systems: ARCHER and TAIPAN. The event was marked by a Colours Parade at Larkhill, with @1stRegiment_RHA, @ScottishGunners and 5th Regt RA on parade as the receiving regiments. #FINDandSTRIKE

Nine doctors have been elected as MPs in the 2024 UK general election. Four doctors are now MPs in the new Labour government, led by the new prime minister, Keir Starmer, while five are among the Conservative MPs elected to the new parliament bmj.com/content/386/bm…

Remembering local man Reverend Frank Harrison Edinger, Chaplain 4th. Class, Army Chaplains' Department. He died on 26 February 1918 in this sinking, aged 33. He is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton. A road in town is named for him.
Revd Nicholas Pye@RevdPye

26 Feb 1917, British hospital ship Glenart Castle departed Newport, Wales, headed for Brest, France, to pick up wounded soldiers. Torpedoed by German U-Boat. Sunk in 8 mins. 32 people rescued, 162 died. An atrocious war crime. Worst ever maritime disaster in Bristol Channel. #WW1

@craigprescott That’s correct (I have mentioned the HoL Act 1999 several times). But that’s not what we are disputing!

@PaoloCapanni1 However his Earldom of Wessex, Earldom of Forfar, and Viscountcy of Severn are all a hereditary peerages. We’re it not for the 1999 Act, he would be entitled to sit in the Lords with those title, as would (eg) the Duke of York, Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Kent.

1/ It’s been a surprisingly busy week for titles. Interestingly, it says the “title will be held by Prince Edward for His Royal Highness’s lifetime”. It’s a life Dukedom, and it won’t pass to his son Viscount Severn.

🎉 Wishing the new Duke of Edinburgh a very Happy Birthday today! The King has conferred the Dukedom of Edinburgh upon his brother, Prince Edward, on his 59th birthday. 🔗royal.uk/dukedom-edinbu…

@PaoloCapanni1 It’s further authority for the point that following the Wensleydale case, the only life peers that have been members of the House of Lords are barons who were granted their peerage under statute. DoE now has a, very novel, life dukedom.

@PaoloCapanni1 And for that matter, the Appellate Jurisdiction Act 1876, s 6 provided for that Lords of Appeal in Ordinary (“Law Lords”) were entitled to sit in the Lords for life.

@craigprescott Valid point, albeit from an era which had no real concept of a of a life peer / peerage for life. DoE could test by applying for a Writ of Summons.

@PaoloCapanni1 I’m not. The Wensleydale peerages case from 1856 made clear that a life peerage granted under the prerogative did not entitle the holder to a seat in the Lords. This was why the Life Peerages Act was enacted in 1958.
