New Narrators! We’ve added four voices to Paper2Audio, including a much-requested deeper male voice. It’s great for anyone who felt their docs need a little more gravitas or, let’s just say, any reading material where extra sultriness in the narration might be appreciated.

In honor of America’s 250th anniversary, we’re giving readers free access to a collection of public-domain non-fiction works and novels that trace the country’s history, ideals, and personal experiences.

We also included an early soccer–er, football–manual for more worldwide appeal, if American history and literature aren’t your cup of tea. No need to throw anything into Boston Harbor.

June updates from Paper2Audio! *New languages* Hindi, Mandarin Chinese, and Japanese added as language options (in beta). Select the language when adding a document. *Bookmarks* Add bookmarks to save your position. View bookmarks in the notes menu. Tap one to seek to the spot.

*Better Pronunciation* -Roman numerals are more accurate with fewer false positives -Dollar amounts ranges (e.g. "$5–$10") are now narrated correctly (previously could be misread as LaTeX math expressions) -URLs read as "domain dot com URL" instead of being spelled out.

*Other summary mode improvements* More reliable opening information and more useful summary outlines, so these modes should be better for quickly understanding a document before deciding whether to listen to the full text.

*Long and Short Summary playback mode enhancements* Long summaries are meaningfully longer and more detailed than short summaries, and both modes scale better based on the length and complexity of the original document.

*New audio playback settings* -"Pause on interruption" controls whether audio playback pauses when interrupted by calls or notifications. -"Allow background music" lets audio from other apps (like music) continue playing alongside Paper2Audio at a lower volume.

*New document filtering and sorting options* -New "text file” filter to easily find plain-text docs. -Filter selections are now persistent in our iOS and Android apps. -"Hide items in collections" toggle to keep queue as unorganized documents only. -New "sort by duration" option.

A small number of scanned PDFs uploaded to Paper2Audio have pages that are sideways or upside down. That sounds like a minor edge case, but for a text-to-speech app it can turn into garbled audio if the page reaches OCR in the wrong orientation.
