University of Houston point guard Kingston Flemings gets some national TV time during the NBA Lottery Draft Lottery. Flemings brought his mom Shayla to the Draft Lottery on Mother's Day. The LA Clippers (fifth), Brooklyn Nets, Sacramento Kings, Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks end up 5th through 9th in the Flemings' range. UH coach Kelvin Sampson argues that Kingston should be a Top 5 pick.

University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson on Kingston Flemings: "I don't think Kingston's a Top 10 pick. I think he's a Top 5 pick. If I was an NBA team, I'd draft him in Top 5. And he may (go there)."

Kelvin Sampson with an impassioned call for University of Houston pride at crowded Coaches' Caravan event in Sugar Land: "I don't know about this commuter school bullshit... We're the University of Houston. We're the University of Houston. Don't you take a backseat to nobody. "Don't talk to me about U of T. Or Texas A&M. We just played Texas A&M, right. How'd that go? ". . . We have respect for everybody in this state. We have respect for everybody in this conference. But we don't take a backseat to nobody. And neither should you. "Quit acting like these teams are up here. No, they're not. You're up here. Start acting like it. Start supporting this program."

Tyus Thomas, who overcame two major shoulder injuries to be a finalist for Nevada Gatorade National Player of the Year this last season, to @PaperCityMag on committing to Houston and getting to join Kelvin Sampson's program: "It means everything to me. I missed the last two summers because of my injury so I kind of feel I fell off the radar a little bit. "But I'm grateful for the opportunity they're giving me. Especially under this type of Coach, this type of program. . . Most definitely, I feel like I have something to prove. Because like I said, I fell off everyone's radar. So I just want to put my name back out there." Kelvin Sampson and his elite developmental staff are betting that this is buy low opportunity on a talented player who is undervalued. Tyus Thomas, who is already 19, will be redshirting next season while his older brother (by 14 months) Dedan Thomas Jr. is the Cougars' starting point guard.

Tyus Thomas, the No. 1 ranked high school point guard in Nevada, has committed to Kelvin Sampson's University of Houston program, continuing the Cougars run of Las Vegas point guards. Thomas, the younger brother of UH's new starting point guard - prized LSU transfer Dedan Thomas Jr. - plans to redshirt next season. Thomas announced his commitment on his Instagram page.

University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson on 6-foot-10 center signee Djafar Silimana: "About a year from now, Djafar will be a freshman. That is what excites me about him. He has a great attitude, is very intelligent and is a hard worker. "He has long arms and is a tremendous kid. He is a perfect redshirt for us. In his second or third year, he is really going to be outstanding for us.” Silimana is a good buddy of UH's McDonald's All-American center Arafan Diane and Diane helped recruit him to Houston as @PaperCityMag previously reported. Diane and Silimana worked out together in Washington D.C. to get ready for their first UH summer conditioning program.

NBC's Reggie Miller after University of Houston product Jamal Shead flies in the air to put back his own miss in this Game 7 for the Raptors: "Jamal Shead is putting on a show here in this first half. You see the athleticism to go back up and get his missed shot. . . He's head and shoulders above (6-foot-9 Cavs center) Jarrett Allen." This is the still somehow underrated crazy athleticism that Shead has been showing for years on display on the NBA's biggest stage. UH assistant Kellen Sampson used to shout out "Manor Mal!" — Shead's high school nickname — whenever the 6-foot-1 point guard would make one of these super athletic jolt plays. "You should have seen him at Manor (High School),” Kellen Sampson told @PaperCityMag for a story back in 2023. “Holy smokes he was jumping out of the gym. I bet I’ve seen Jamal 100 times in high school, AAU, summer ball. What he’s doing now is we’re starting to see the nastiness return to his game. He’s starting to hunt for it." Shead put up 14 points, two assists and that highlight offensive rebound putback in the first half of Game 7. #430787" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">papercitymag.com/culture/jamal-…

University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson remembers how fearful NBA front offices acted when it came to Jamal Shead in the draft. ESPN Big 12 guru Fran Fraschilla tried to tell everyone he knew in the league what they were missing. Now Shead, coming off an 18 point, 7 assist, two steal playoff game, is a huge reason why the Toronto Raptors have pushed the favored Cavs to a Game 6 tonight. "There's nothing that boy does that surprises me," Sampson says. "I just remember how fearful a lot of the teams were that were calling. Scared money don't make money, brother. "If you knew him like I knew him, you wouldn't be sitting there asking questions. But the questions you're asking me, you're trying to talk yourself into him. And I'm not going to do that." Instead Sampson wanted Shead to go to an NBA team where he'd be valued.

Houston Rockets forward Tari Eason on playing the season knowing he'd be heading into offseason as a restricted free agent: "It's hard to say I didn't think about. I thought about it. I was drafted here. I grew up here. My family's here. I love Houston. As far as everything else, God knows."

Houston Rockets guard Reed Sheppard to Charles Barkley on Inside the NBA on the Rockets' growing confidence as they share the basketball: "We're trusting each other. Everyone's super confident playing right now. When everybody's touching the rock and you get a couple of shots to go in, you guard better. "And everyone's just more impactful in the game." Forced to lean on each other, this young Rockets starting lineup of players all aged 21 to 24, has come back from down 0-3 in the series to push the LA Lakers to a Game 6 in Houston Friday night. With the often questioned Sheppard making two of the biggest plays of Game 5, including the get-back steal on LeBron James, that squelched the Lakers' last real push. These young Rockets finished with 25 assists on their 33 made field goals. Game 6 will be at 8:30 pm Friday night at Toyota Center with Houston trying to take another huge step in its attempt to become the first team in NBA history to ever come back from an 0-3 playoff series deficit.

Bryce Jackson accepting all of Kingston Flemings' trophies at these Cougar Choice Awards is a whole vibe. Jackson, the only one of that Houston basketball Fantastic Four recruiting class who will be back next season, earned raves from lead assistant Kellen Sampson late in the year for his practice defense. The redshirting Jackson and Kordel Jefferson sometimes drove the starting backcourt of Flemings and Milos Uzan crazy with their turnover forcing ways on the scout team.

Houston Rockets forward Jabari Smith Jr. on how much Alperen Sengun's talk to the team meant before Game 4: "Just the belief aspect. Just the family that we have here. Just pulling us together and letting us know that whatever happens - win, lose or draw - these next few games, we're going to go out with fight. We're going to go out swinging. We're going to go out together. "We're going to go out doing the right things that got us here. . . "That's basically what he was saying. And rallying us together. It was a good talk. And we needed it for sure."
Chris Baldwin@ChrisYBaldwin

Amen Thompson on the speech that Alperen Sengun gave his Rockets teammates before the Game 4 win: "Pulling us all back in there and being like that's not how we end it. If we're going to go out, we're going to go out with a fight." Sengun gathered all his teammates together after the morning shootaround to deliver the speech in a players-only gathering.

Utah Prep Academy high school center Djafar Silimana has committed to Kelvin Sampson's University of Houston program as the school announced on its Instagram page. The 6-foot-10 Silimana brings plenty of raw potential and a reported 7-foot-6 wingspan. Will be a freshman this upcoming season and seems like a natural redshirt candidate.

University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson on the Cougars' new starting point guard Dedan Thomas Jr.: "Our point guard position has been the strength of our program. We have never not had a great point guard. Now, we slide to Dedan Thomas Jr., and we will just keep going. DJ is a point guard’s point guard. He can manage the game, and he understands the game at a freakishly high level. "He is very smart and can get in the paint. He plays off his imagination and is very savvy. All of our guards are going to benefit from having DJ because he is going to make them all better.” Thomas joins Sampson's ultra-successful UH point guard tradition that includes Kingston Flemings, Milos Uzan, Jamal Shead, DeJon Jarreau and Galen Robinson Jr.
