It's not about the popularity of the product and marketting. But not giving the proper credibility to the rightful owner or orginator of the product. Imagine you build a product, open source it. I take the code, sell it, make millions and also say it is my own code. Won't you get angry if I am making money from what you actually built? And also claim to be the owner though in actual was yours. Best example is OLA, UBER, RAPIDO, all these use their mapping system from OSM (Open Street Map). An open crowdsource map. They give credit and contribute to OSM in return. Based on OSM's license. Licensing is not going to stop anyone from taking the code but it is a legal document of your project that states officially that if this project is forked and used, a proper credit should be given to me. If credit is not given it is an act of crime.

@ayush024k That's why license is important. If you find your code, someone forked it, modified it but has added a paywall and didn't give credit to you. You can legally sue them. But depends on what license you apply to your project.
